Opportunity waits for woman to claim $3000 purse

Queensland Times
May 1st 2014

IN eight previous Ipswich Mile Gifts, no women's runner was won the major prize of $3000.

Queensland Athletics League secretary Steve Minns hopes that changes on Saturday.

"It always surprises me each year,'' he said of how runners finish in the handicapped event.

"I'd like to see a female win it.''

This year's hopefuls are Madeline McGuire, Sarah Bellchambers and Margaret Atthow.

Exciting teenage prospect McGuire is a member of the Ipswich and District Athletics Club who has performed consistently over many years, including winning a national bronze medal at last year's under-17 800m.

Bellchambers is a former 1500m junior state champion.

Atthow is contesting the Ipswich Mile Gift for the third time, having finished fifth last year. She won a gold in the 1500m and silver in the 800m at this year's state titles.

"Margie, off 250m, is running well at the moment,'' Minns said.

"She's done the work after the state titles.''

However, she'll need to outrun those around her including Cam Crowley, one of Queensland's top decathletes for many years.

Ipswich Mile 2014 Opens Handicaps and Profiles
RedConnor O'Leary105Qld State 1500m Champion who has recently ran a 3.55.  If he shows this form and copes with the track he will be every chance to be the second backmarker to win since Glen Yarham in 2011
WhitePatrick Hagan140Gold medalist at the 2014 Qld State Steeplechase.  Classy runner who should excel on this track and is every chance of taking it out if he has done the work.
BlueAndrew Barralet150Has run every year since 2006 (best a 2nd in 2007) and knows this track well.  Really wants to break through for a win after 8 tries. Was 4th last year off 135m so has every chance off 150m.
YellowConnor McNamara160"Local athlete from the Ipswich Athletic Club who won silver in 2013 and bronze in 2014 at the Qld Open Steeplechase. McNamara finished 3rd last year off 180m and will continue to improve as he matures.  Is in good 1500m form and should gain confidence that he can take this out after a break through performance last year.
GreenClay Dawson160"Dawson is in the form of his life after a impressive race record at the Ipswich QLD Parkrun on 8th February 2014. Best result was a 6th in 2012. Known as a exceptional distance runner and if he holds onto Brittain's pace will have a huge chance of taking this out.
BlackRichard Cambell180Superfit Triathlete who recently came 2nd in the 6km Caloundra Cross Country meet last month. Better suited to longer distances but coming from a Surf Lifesaving background the sand surface will suit just fine.
GreyAndrew Dey200Last years defending champion off 235m who is running his fourth Ipswich Mile. Was in fantastic shape last year and will feature again this year as he has continued good form.  Handicap reduction may hurt.
Pink/PurpleJack Warner230"Very talented local runner who is a 4 time winner of the Ipswich Parkrun.  Recently teamed up with fellow competitors McNamara and O'Leary for the mighty Ipswich Club to win the Men Distance Medley Qld Athletics Open.  In good form and will go well.
OrangeMagaret Atthow250This is Atthow's third run at the the Ippy Mile after a 5th placing last year.  Gold medalist at this years Qld State 1500m and silver in the 800m, Atthow could be our first female winner as she has been lifted 10m.
Green/GreenCam Crowley250Has been one of Queensland's top Decathletes for many years and Australian Bronze Medalist in 2010.  Crowley is big and strong and his long stride will suit this sand surface.  First run on this track but the Handicapper is expecting a big showing.from this tough athlete.
MaroonAndrew McCabe265London Olympic finalist and Australian Record Holder in the 4*100 team. One of Australia's premier sprinters but alas has been injured of late. McCabe has previously run the Ipswich Mile finishing at the tail of the field. This distance will trouble him especially backing up after doing the 300m.  A very interesting prospect to see how a elite speed athlete travels over the sand on this 4 minute journey.
Orange/GreenSarah Bellchambers280Former 1500m Junior State Champion in 2012.  Has not done a lot of racing of late but if she has done the training could surprise many starters in the race.
Red/Light BlueWayne Adams300Coached by Olympic 100m relay finalist Andrew McCabe, Adams is better known as a sprinter and struggled last year to finish last over this distance after competing prior to the race in the 300m.
PurpleMadeline McGuire300Was 8th last year off 290m handicap. Bronze medalist at the 2013 Australian U17 800m. Madeline was the 2011 winner of the Ipswich Junior Mile and if she has done the distance work she will have every chance.
