1 Stawell 120m Womens Gift on Fri Apr 11, 2014 7:57 pm

Athletic Observations

As there was no review for the womens line up for the gift i thought id have a go..

Some Good Quality Backmarkers in for a chance

Breen, Coates, Basic, Moore, Hubbard, Byrt, Kay. Wells

From the front markers Purkiss,Payne,Bousted, Cosgriff, fisher and Austin.

Breen 0 :- not sure she's in the 11.11 form , Great to see her support the Pro Racing scene, but place at best for me.

Basic 4.25 :- Has a Great start but can she finish the last 20m where it is needed Place best for me.

Moore 8.75 :- Has a great handicap this year and after watching ringwood on the weekend, Katie in Great form and maybe "moore in the tank"
In the Mix, Definitely Top 3

Hubbard 6m :- Also a proven winner on the grass wining the 400m this time last year and finished in the top 3 at stonnington. Another in the mix Top 3 chance.

Byrt 5.5 :- Another Quick starter in good form, running well at the classic's but handicap might be harder from. Finalist for me

Kay 6 :- Finalist in the 200m last year, rumors has it coming off injury so not sure of current form. Maybe Finalist.

Wells 5.75 :- Ran Well at the Nationals. Not sure of her speed early on but will definitely finish well with that 400m endurance. ????? on finish

From the front markers Purkiss 10.25 ,Payne 13 ,Bousted 14.25, Cosgriff 16.75, Austin 13.75 and Fisher 18m, i think fisher is the best of the chances coming second to katie on the weekend and moving from 12.75 to 18m is a fair lift (Obviously with the inclusion of Breen), Payne is a good finisher but has won a few this year and lost a couple of metres, and the versatile ballarat winner Cosgriff will Also be one to chase and has the fitness to last.

But my Pick of the bunch is Maddie Coates. She has 6.25m and no doubt has the fastest finish and top speed of any female i have seen in a while and 120m suits her big time. For example when she had won the Queanbeyan Gift she had 5.5m and ran 13.57 with a tail wind. (breen at the time was off scratch but not running as quick as she is now). With 6.25m now and obviously running quicker than at queanbeyan it would be great to see her in action.

For Me

Coates 1st
Hubbard (top 3)
Moore (top 3)
Fisher (Smokie)
Cosgriff or Breen

I think Geelan , Jones and Howard definately can be added to the mix as well. But your right Coates and Hubbard will be hard to hold off and will be flying late.

If Breen can run anywhere near her 11.11 pace (equates to 13.33) it's going to take a mighty effort to beat her.

4 Re: Stawell 120m Womens Gift on Sun Apr 13, 2014 9:10 pm

No disrespect to Mel Breen but she can't run the 120m uphill on grass at Stawell in 13.33secs.Anyone who runs 13.33 will win easily. High 13's should get the job done so Breen can't be left out of the equation

5 Question on Sun Apr 13, 2014 9:38 pm

Can i ask how does Coates get a lift after winning the biggest women's gift in the country? In November she ran off 5.5m to win the Queanbeyan gift in 13.57. At Stawell she runs off 6.25m she'll run 13.5 at worst. My picks are;
Coates/Donaldson/Basic/Breen/Hubbard in that order. Donaldson is a dark horse and a heaps better runner than her 18m mark reflects. If she's in reasonable shape she'll be in the mix

It looks like the entire field has been lifted due to Breen's 11.11, soreoldguy.

The field has been lifted about 4 metres. Would have to have Jones in the mix based on Stonnington.

But also Belinda Carusi, off a front mark, strong performances in Albury and Bendigo... could def run into a finals birth

9 Re: Stawell 120m Womens Gift on Mon Apr 14, 2014 1:53 pm

Actually with the lifts across the board maybe it will take a 13:30 to 13:50 to get it done. May be harder then I first thought for the backmarkers to get over the top of the others!! Should be very interesting

I am a bit late... but here are my picks. I wrote these down during the week and watched the heats and realised some of my observations were correct. surely the handicappers have seen what I have seen this year.

• Kimberley Geelan
Placed 6th at Bendigo and Ballarat. At both events ran quicker in her heat than final.
• Maddie Coats
Started the season off 1.5m after winning Queen, now off 6.25m (4.75m
Recent PB over the 100m and 200m (but no handicap change?????)
• Kendra Hubbard
Hardly been seen this season, except for her great run at Stonnington (3rd).
• Katie Moore
6.25m lift since the start of the season (including the Stawell
field lift).  Found form at Ringwood with her average RPM for the season (0.1269)
improving at Ringwood (0.1228).  The one to beat.
• Sarah Blizzard
3rd at Burramine, 1st at Bendigo, 3rd at Geelong, 6th at Trinity,
1st St Albans.
• Belinda Carusi
Shown form with a 2nd at Bendigo.
• Angela Byrt
5th at Geelong after winning Daylesford.
• Holly Dobbyn
• Natasha McDowell
5th at Stonnington
• Cara Boustead
2nd at Ballarat
• Melanie Purkiss

• Alice platen
• Jacquelin McCann
• Kasey Moore
• Tara Angell
• Natasha Hughes
