John was outstanding as a schoolboy sprinter> He ran 200 meters (220 yards those days) in the time of 21 seconds ( in that era unheard of ) the seniors that day were running in mid 22,s.Officials at the time were flabbergasted and order the track remeasured,I think they were relieved when the track measured 6 inches short, therefore no record. He was a certainty to make the olympic squad for the London Olympics of 1948, but played football and broke his leg.(could not run in the official trials). He applied for permission to run private trials under their supervision, but they said no way Mr Stoney. So he said get st----ed I,ll run pro.He entered Bendigo and was handicapped to run from 5 1/2 yards , he bolted in then went to Stawell off 2 yards and got beaten by an eyebrow. Stawell officials and the viewing public declared
his run the greatest ever at Stawell. PS I was there and saw it all.

my father william (bill) john marshall was very very good mates with john stoney and they ran a lot together and against each other as youngsters and as pro's.
he also used to love telling us about stoney's stawell efforts and would always always say that his run was better than ravelomanantsoa - very high praise indeed

hopefully stawell will do something to remind people of how good he was
