Sprinter in 2011 return

TOOWOOMBA'S Charlotte van Veenendaal will get an early gauge on her new year form when she lines up against Australia's best sprinters tomorrow night in Brisbane.

Veenendaal's 2011 campaign bursts from the blocks in the season-opening Brisbane Track Classic at the Nathan State Athletics Facility.

The 22-year-old will resume her rivalry with Australia's elite runners, including Olympian Sally Pearson, Melissa Breen and Laura Whaler in the 100m and 200m events.

Veenendaal is eager to resume competition – injury-free – ahead of the national championships in April.

“This is the first Athletics Australia Tour meet of the year and it's attracted a pretty good field,” Veenendaal said yesterday.

“I'm looking forward to getting back racing against some of the girls, including Sally who I haven't raced for a while.”

Veenendaal is coming off a preparation disrupted by the passing of her grand-father and Queensland's wet summer but is in top physical shape.

“I've had a bit of a broken preparation, but it's all good now,” Veenendaal said.

“It's great to be injury-free and feeling no pain for the first time in a while.”

Veenendaal has one eye on qualifying for this year's world championships in Korea but is not placing any expectations on herself.

“I'm going to think more about enjoying my running and not so much about my times,” Veenendaal said.
