A National Handicapping system has been talked about for some time now and I believe the AAC, VAL, SAAL and WCAL have been working towards it. It is after all a good idea but……

What does a National Handicapping system look like and will it be any better?

Will it be transparent?

Even now in 2017 we still don’t have transparent handicapping, by transparent I mean disclosing on a website how each runners handicap is determined. It would be so easy?

Any National handicapping system would have to be transparent if it is to have credibility and be long-lasting.

Why is there such resistance to transparent disclosure of handicapping?

I am in favour of a National handicapping System but only if the system used to determine handicaps is transparent and each runners handicap and how they were awarded that handicap is transparently disclosed on a website anything less would be more of the same and lack credibility. I’m not saying that there should not be a discretion component to handicapping but the extend of discretion must be transparently disclosed and how discretion is applied must be transparently disclosed.

The VAL recently sent out an invitation for an open forum to discuss issues that would progress and improve pro running in Victoria. A good start would be a transparently disclosed handicapping system this has been the elephant in the room for many many years now....will they address it?

….will a National handicapping system finally deliver transparent handicapping??
