Runners and Trainers,

Brief notes from the VRTA AGM - 29/09/17.

Your elected VRTA committee for the 2017/18 season.

President - Arron Downes
Vice President - Ricky Dunbar
Secretary - Stefan Catalano
Treasurer - Angela Wilson
Committee - Todd Ireland, John Henry, David Haigh, Peter O'Dwyer.

We welcome Stefan Catalano onto the committee, and thank him for his enthusiasm to not only come onboard, but to be successfully elected into the role of secretary. Also, we welcome back David Haigh onto the VRTA committee. With a long, successful running career, along with his extensive knowledge of the sport, Dave is a welcomed back, and he will be a valuable committee member, as well as a great representative for you, the runners and trainers.

There has been much talk over the past seasons' to the value and relevance of the VRTA committee in the current pro running environment.

The Victorian Runners & Trainers Association (VRTA) Committee was established to act as the voice for the athletes and trainers of the Victorian Athletic League (VAL) in providing representation, support and information.

Member Benefits:

Representation at all VAL Steward enquiries

Support and guidance for appeals to the Board of the VAL

Support to help you negotiate the handicap review process

Support and guidance for any VAL related issues concerning you

Representation for you (the athletes and trainers) on the VAL Board

The Presentation Night, also organised by the VRTA

What we do- What you might not know:

1. We provide support and representation for the runners and trainers of the VAL

If you are called in by the VAL stewards for any reason, we can represent you in discussions with the stewards and explain any relevant rules

We can support athletes at appeals to the Board of the VAL

We can help you negotiate the handicap review process

We can clarify rules that may concern you

2. We aim to act as a united voice for VAL athletes and trainers

We have a representative on the VAL Board and liaise directly with the VAL Board on relevant issues.
If there is ever anything concerning you or the wider VAL community, you can discuss the issue with the VRTA Committee. We will then liaise with the VAL Board, athletes, trainers and clubs where appropriate to negotiate the best outcome for you.

3. We provide sponsorship to clubs for races

What we achieved last season:-

We represented a small number of athletes that requested assistance with stewarding issues.

We sponsored and assisted races at 8 carnivals, providing $3600 towards prizemonry requests from clubs. (Important to note that if these funds had not been provided, there would have been races that would not have gone ahead).

We hosted the annual awards night, and, after listening to feedback (your feedback) changed the format of the night back to a more formal, sit down dinner.

This season we are hoping to further assist our sport, and have brought back our VRTA Gift meeting as the 2nd carnival of the season. The highlight of our carnival this season is the implementation of the Men's and Women's 200 Gifts, with prize money going to parity for both races.

We want to remain relevant in the professional running community now and in the future, but our existence will only remain, if we have the support of you, the runners and trainers.

All the best to you all for a stellar 2017/18 season!
