East Kilbride duo sprint to SHGA titles at Helensburgh writes Shane Fenton

The two most recent winners of the New Year Sprint, Calum McWilliam and Greg Kelly, both East Kilbride AC claimed the first two SHGA running championships of the season at the Helensburgh & Lomond Highland Games on Saturday.

Kelly sprinted to the SHGA British 90m title in 9.76seconds ahead of his club mate McWilliam 9.84 who edged out Greg Turnbull,Jedburgh for second place by 100th of a second in 9.85.

McWilliam once again got the better of Turnbull to land the SHGA 200 metres Scottish championship, the current New Year champion stopped the clock at 23.50 with Turnbull runner up in 24.04, third place went to Kilbarchan's Praise Olatoke in 26.36.

McWilliam made it a double on the day with victory in the 90m handicap from Olatoke and Turnbull.

The 200 metres handicap was won by David Allan,Balloch in 19.82, he came home ahead of Greg Turnbull 20.02 with Praise Olatoke in third in 20.67.

Dean Whiteford made the journey up from Innerleithen a worthwhile one by taking out the 800 metres handicap in 1:56.6 from David Allan 1;57.42 and and Willie Bates,Tullibody 1:57.77.

There was a Campeltown 1 – 2 in the Open 1600 metres handicap with Daniel Dutton 4;14.12 edging out Stewart McGeachy 4;14.59 with Willie Bates back in third in 4:28.71.

Both the Youth's 90 metres and 200 metres handicaps were dominated by athletes from the local Helensburgh club results were 90m 1 A Brown 9.52,2nd C Portier 10.08 3rd K Dorizon 10.55.

200m 1st E McCartney 24.32 2nd E Rooney 24.95 3rd A Brown 25.35.

Gaspard Lecrivain,Aberdeen 1:07.07 just got the better of James Scott,Helensburgh 2:07.56 to win the 800 metres with Sean Bates 2:16.85 in third place.

There was further local success in the Youth's 1600 metres with Ian Wilson ,Helensburgh winning in 4.52 from Gaspard Lecrivain 5.04 and Sean Bates 5.10.

The games also staged the SHGA Scottish 22lb shot putt championship which was won by Vlad Tulacek from the Czech Republic with a throw of 47' 1'' which was a foot further than second placed Scott Rider,London 46' 1'' with Dan Carlin,Renfrew third with 41' 9''. Tulacek also won the 16lb shot 57'3'' , 56lb weight over the bar 16' and shared the caber title with Dan Carlin. Scott Rider won three events 28lb for distance 79' 5'', 16lb hammer 130' 2'' and Sheaf Toss 37'.
