It is slightly more difficult to determine the Women's Stawell Gift field due to it having a different limit to what the open Gift has. If we are serious about equality they should be the same limit. Should it now be the Men's Gift not Open? If the prize money does not increase does the limit for the Men's change? It should but I hope it does not because it changes the competition for a win and a lift for the men. Anyway, this is the thread about the women.

Same format as the men up to and including Keilor.(Event name, Distance, category, lift, winners name, mark, best time from semi or final).

Hastings 120m Women's: 1m Sophia Fighera 5.00 14.086
Warrnambool 120m Women's: 1m Jody Richards 13.00 14.263
Terang 120m Women's: 1m Michelle Young 16.25 14.345
Waverley 100m Women's: 1m Alexia Loizou 4.25 11.749
Marysville 100m Women's: 1m Zoe Neale 6.50 11.614
M'borough 120m Women's: 0.75m Tarryn Fisher 15.75 14.346
Castlemaine 120m Women's: 0.75m Clare De Salis 8.00 13.829
Daylesford 100m Women's: 0.75m  Loryn Savoia 10.25 12.644
Rye 120m Women's: 0.75m Kysha Praciak 7.00 14.162
St Albans 120m Women's: 0.75m  Megan Mcmahon 16.75 14.409
Wangaratta: 120m Women's: 0.5m Brittany Austin 10.00 14.050
Maribyrnong 120m Women's: 0.5m Danielle McDowell 20.00 14.769
Parkdale 120m Women's: 0.5m Ebony Lane 5.25 14.134
Ballarat 120m Women's: 0.5m Jody Richards 12.25 14.106
Keilor 120m Women's: 0.5m Bree Masters 5 13.929

Fighera stamped her authority early in the season. I think that she probably thinks she has enough to make a run at the final. She is likely to run off 5.75m not getting the full lift depending on rounding. She is a quality athlete and could go close to making the final.

Keith Richards has won two races so is not entitled to the lift. Doesn't really matter because she will be sitting on the limit by the end of the season. She will not run close enough to 14 flat to make the final. Great season though.

Young got the win at Terang but will not trouble anyone at Stawell. She would have to improve a lot to get in the final off a much tighter mark.

Loizou looked good at Waverley, very good. She smashed out the 100m and is one of the early picks to make the big final. Her 11.749 still gives her the lift she is entitled to. Off 6 or 6.25 depending on rounding places her right in the window. Big chance.

Neale won on a downhill track so her time has been adjusted by .1 as per the stewards report. 8.75m is quite handy. She is an interesting one as the field was not strong but the bonus gives her a good shot at the semi final at least.

Fisher will need to come back too far from her Maryborough win. Take out of consideration like some of the others.

De Salis was fantastic! People keep saying that the track is extremely quick but I think it is pretty standard. She will not get the lift but is right in this with her pull.

Savoia won at Daylesford but that is an absolute lottery. I wouldn't count on her too much as she will have to come back to 11m. Not in my calculations.

Praciak will have 7.75m and be right in the mix for the 14 flat needed. Rye can be traditionally quick, but like Castlemaine there is no adjustment. Different athletes perform differently with big tail winds and she may have here.

McMahon had a win. She will not enter the gift.

Austin moves out to 10.5m and right on the target time of 14 flat. Can she handle the uphill nature of Stawell? Wangaratta is probably much the same track as Stawell, so quite possibly.

McDowell wont enter.

Lane took out Parkdale and sneaks back out to 5.75m for Stawell. Back on a good mark. Her legs move very fast and she continues to surprise me. She ran 14.08 off 6m last year and looks better now.

Masters will come back and still be in the window. Gee she looked good at Keilor! I think she can still do some damage.

How does this turn into a final? Just off the winners so far in Vic that are entitled to a lift. Assuming everyone enters and is fit.

Possible
Masters 4.25m
Fighera 5.75m
Lane 5.75m
Loizou 6m
De Salis 6.25m
Neale 8.75m

Let's start the conversation.

Good pick of the final Mex.
Fighera ran 14.01 in her heat at Hastings and will run from 5m at Easter. Still puts her in top 3 in my eyes.
I think swap out De Salis for Austin in your final 6. The Castlemaine runs were impressive on a traditionally fast track. Clare was looking at 8.75 but now is 2.5m worse off. She will be too close to the likes of Loizou, Lane, Fighera etc to make any impact.
Brittany Austin has scope to improve and plenty of hcp buffer to assist staying in front for a long way. Has great bloodlines with grandfather being the late Reg Austin and has a strong technique and build to suit the Stawell 120m track.
Zoe Neale is the pick of these 6 runners. Although Marysville times don’t count, she managed to defeat Kirsty Stevens by approx 3m who is in great form and close to a 120m win herself. Kate Jones, Steph Jinks and Jody Richards also beaten over 4m + in that final. Neale ran 14.42 from 7.50m Stawell semi 2018 as a 16 year old. Now has improved in power output, with exceptional work rate in early stages of sprints.
Bree Masters has to be favourite at this stage, even 0.75m back. Didn’t require any intensity in her runs yesterday and having to chase doesn’t seem to affect her technique in late stages of race. Covers competitors close to her in hcp. Will depends on how long the bunnies out the front can hold on for.

Very interested to see what happens if Coates runs. Beat Lane 3 times from minus 2, and looks to be moving better now. Does she start from behind scratch or field get a lift.
Also interesting that in the history of the lift system I don't believe anyone didn't receive full lift for running too quick. ( Maybe rominan at Bendigo). But Fighera, masters, possibly lane won't receive full lift for running too quick. Will this hurt there chances come Stawell???.
Maybe an another Queenslander??. Robo always has one up his sleeve. Time will tell.

Mara is presumably referring to some of these items from the October newsletter on the Stawell lifts:
1. The athlete must not break net time in the win.
2. In receiving this lift, athletes will not be handicapped to a mark that places them beyond their ceiling handicap.
3. To be eligible for the lift, the athlete must not break the distance ceiling time in the win.
4. A handicap lift that places the athlete under the ceiling target time will not be applied.
5. Interstate female athletes must have competed in a VAL event within the past 2 seasons or have an initial handicap of the novice mark or less.

Add in Hana Basic and Ellie Whittingham from Bendigo final - no lifts but close enough in times for a Gift final spot.

Laura Downie won convincingly at Berwick in what was probably a sub 14s time, and gets a bonus half metre for Stawell with no official electric time recorded for the final.

Take Brittany Austin off the favourites list. Goes from a potential 10.50m after winning Wang, to 8.50m at Stawell. Interstate OGA clause in full flight.
Bree Masters back an additional 1/4m than predicted; still in the mix though.
Jinks, Kenshole and Ryan have handy lifts being highly competitive in various finals throughout the season.

liv Ryan with a decent mark in this one, thought this would be a pride win- but since changed, have the pride girls making final at best, Zoe Neale off 8.75m will make some people nervous early, E.Lane will run a great race but not convinced her finish is strong enough to hold off L.Ryan. All girls off the limit have to be respected here as history as taught us.

Unless your running 12.6 on track off the 11 metre limit. Forget about it. When Liv Ryan won with 13.73 off limit. Rpm 11.55. It will be won in around the same time again, and some high quality backmarkers are coming.

Lets wait to see where the money goes.

My picks after doing a little Good Friday research.

Zoe Neale for the win,
Would love to see Loz win, she is in such good form at the moment.  You go girl!

24Women's Stawell Gift Final Empty HANDICAPPING on Sat Apr 20, 2019 3:58 pm

outtopasture

Can I whinge about the handicapping of the womens gift...
I thought there was a key time that everyone is marked to run. if that time was around 15.0 then the handicapper has done a terrific job. because that is the average time that the women ran, which is really really slow for the stawell gift.

With only 3 times under 14...well to me something is very wrong. i guess the handicapper had no idea how to handicap the red but forgot to give the bunnies a lift?
Also top 12 times has no ath with a handicap above 8.75m - so that is telling as well for those with handicaps from 9-11
Seems unbalanced.

When $40000 is kicking around we can do better.

Just disappointed again with the amateur nature of professional league.

Good luck to the girls in the semis - its an awesome event to be in,it  would just be good if all of you could have a fairer chance of winning

yeah yeah, if I whinge - then why don't I do the handicapping....not a vic resident
