At first look Harrison Hunt looks well off with 2.50m. Only back 1.25m for donkey licking them in last years Bay Sheff final. Has a dubious 100m pb of 10.51 from Finland in a race where Jake Doran ran 10.15.
However you then cast your eyes 3m further up the track and see Jara Konteh off 5.50m with p.b’s of 10.85 for 100m and more importantly 21.28 for 200m. These are times from 1 year ago and assume no further improvement. He was very good winning the Keilor gift.
Then you cast your eyes a further 1.50m up the track and see Dhruv Rodrigues Chico off 7.00m with p.b’s of 10.91 for 100m and 21.69 for 200m. Won the first gift race of the season at Hastings to lock away the 1m Stawell lift.

For context, last year Jacob Despard had run a 10.69 in Jan and won Stawell comfortably off 4.25m

Probably shouldn't leave out Liam Moss off 4.75m who was quite impressive coming 3rd in Bay Sheff final. Pb's of 10.78 and 21.51.
I just feel after watching the SA 100m title that Harrison has him covered.

Fair points Ribera. While he only has  four athletes behind him, I'm happy with Harrison Hunt's mark of 2.50m. He doesn't have the 100m/200m amateur times of some of the others around him but I get the feeling he can match them on the grass over 120m.

I was talking with Matt Rizzo at the nationals and I concur with his view that Hunt is a better 'sheffield' athlete on grass than he is on the synthetic track over 100m.

Cam Searle and Jordan Shelley performed better at the nationals than Hunt and get a start off him so they are definitely in the conversation.

Could be a few fronties in the Stawell final this year, so hoping one of the backies can get amongst them.

Not sure how Harrison hunt get 2.5 after winning bay sheffield off 3.75, get a bigger pull for winning Maryborough, almost same as Keilor/ballarat (1.25 pull) and not even close to half the prize money. Go to Bernie gift, Hunt beats Despard with only half metre between them in final, won bay final by 2 metres after Lugo goes 12.19 in his heat, big head wind in final so final times show us nothing. He got pulled almost double for running 2nd in 2017. strange, wont win though.

Fair points Bill, but from a squad point of view I have five entered and three are completely uncompetitive. A fourth has a good mark but has had some distractions in his prep; so at least I've got one with a chance of getting beyond the heats. king

Youngy trained athletes allways have to be respected they aways come to race, Hunt's tough as they come after running 2nd at bay in 2017- just to work his ass off to come back in 2018 with a big pull to prove everyone wrong, can do nothing but respect that. lets race.

I don't usually do a write up of the main poll fancies but Bang Bang called me out. I think everyone who thinks they know me understand how much I look forward to this time of year. The Stawell Gift is an iconic footrace and we are all lucky to be a part of maintaining this history. Walking along the streets and seeing he names of past winners brings a flood of memories. It is these memories that I love to share with people who do not know about our sport.

On to the poll leaders.

Jara Konteh 5.5m 16% - Jara looks the type of athlete who could make a charge on Monday. He has the right temperament to run his own race. I think his win at Keilor showed that he needs to be considered for a finals place. Keilor once was the hardest final to make other than Stawell as many threw their charge at the semi as a trial for Easter. His coach knows how to get an athlete up and has built quite a nice resume himself. Jara makes the final and runs top 4.

Jayden Gilfillan 8m 15% - We have spoken about Gilfillan previously. We know that there are athletes that already have the mark and don't worry about chasing a bonus. Why not sting the bookies a little on top of the winners cheque? Gilfillan ran a PB over the 200m in feb which indicates to me that he has the strength over the 120m. I just feel that he needs to have improved more to really challenge for the win. I can see him make a final but think he will be at the back end if he does.

Jason Bailey 10m 16% - 'Bad Boy' Bailey is your outright favourite. Earlier in the season I questioned his ability to make the final. Having watched him run away from Seinfeld's mate at Berwick changes my mind a lot. People can say what they like about Newman in that race, what I saw was a guy under instructions to go with Bailey but he couldn't keep up. And he starts behind him in the gift. Good luck Jack. If 'Bad Boy' controls this race he will not feel anyone until the very end. He has followed the Rizzo model by taking his gift and then destroying 70m races until Easter. Given that he will start on about 2.75m in the 70m next season says that his 10m for this weekend is well and truly enough.

Matt Burleigh 10m 9% - Tom Melbourne finally got a win, both the horse and the runner. In other seasons we might be focusing more on Burleigh but his stable mate has him covered. Burleigh has made almost every final this season and judging by his placing he was having a crack at each one. He surprised many with his final at Bay, myself included, and has stayed up for the majority of the season. He could make the final here and it would probably make things easier for 'Bad Boy' Bailey having him next to him on the start line.

One thing is for sure, come Easter Monday a hush will go over the crowd as it has 130 odd times before and after that guns goes off we only have about 12 seconds to write a new name in the history books.

Safe travels.
