Rouge-Serret sizzles at Stawell Gift

TULLAMARINE athlete Aaron Rouge-Serret scored a sizzling win in the Backmarkers Invitation Handicap on the fourth and final day at the Stawell Gift carnival.

The Athletics Essendon runner made up for narrowly missing out on a spot in the 120m Gift main event – nosed out by one one-hundredth of a second in the semi-final – by storming to victory in the star-studded invitational.

Off 1m and in lane 2 Rouge-Serret knuckled down in the finishing stages of the sprint to beat runner-up Adrian Mott and third-placed former world champion Kim Collins, who started from scratch.

The man who edged Rouge-Serret from a place in the Gift final, Andrew McCabe, went on to finish third in the feature behind winner Mitchell Williams, from the Gold Coast, and runner-up Sydneysider Edward Ware.

Meanwhile, Airport West runner Alice Platten took out the women’s 400m handicap final in a nail-biting finish.

Platten was back in the field and in traffic entering the final straight, but as the leaders tired plucky Platten kept coming and grabbed the lead just in time.

The men’s 400m backmarkers handicap was taken out by Flemington runner Simon Fitzpatrick, who stormed home ahead of runner-up Arnold Sorinas and third-placed Matt Grant.
