St Lawrence rewrites the record books in Milan

Commonwealth Games 5000m nominee Ben St Lawrence has shown he is on track for New Delhi (IND) by clocking the fifth fastest time over 3000m in Australian athletics history at the Notturna di Milano meet in Milan, Italy, overnight.

Less than a week after posting a time of 7:58.55 to place eighth over 3000m at the IAAF Continental Cup meet in Split (CRO) last weekend, St Lawrence last night crossed the line in 7:42.94 to leap from No. 29 to No. 5 on the national all-time list, trailing only Craig Mottram (7:32.19), Collis Birmingham (7:38.77), Shaun Creighton (7:41.60) and Lee Troop (7:41.78) on the Australian all-time leaderboard.

The result betters St Lawrence’s previous career-low mark of 7:49.28, set at the Ostrava Golden Spike meet in the Czech Republic in May, by almost a full seven seconds and shows the 28-year-old New South Welshman is on track for a big Commonwealth Games debut in New Delhi next month.

Joining St Lawrence in Milan overnight was fellow in-form middle distance runner Collis Birmingham, who clocked the fourth fastest time over 1500m of his career to place seventh in 3:36.53, just over a second outside the personal best time of 3:35.50 he recorded on the Brussels (BEL) leg of the IAAF Diamond League tour in August.

Fellow Australian Mitchell Kealey finished ninth in 3:37.96.

National 400m champion Ben Offereins was the only Australian to feature on the podium overnight, the one-lap specialist placing third in a time of 46.47 ahead of Commonwealth Games 4x400m relay teammates Joel Milburn (46.90) in seventh and young gun Kevin Moore (46.98) in eighth.

In other results in Milan overnight, sprint queen Melissa Breen finished sixth over 100m in a time of 11.88 (w:-0.4) and two-lap runner Lachlan Renshaw placed fifth over 800m in a time of 1:47.26.

Breen is struggling. can't see her making the final in Dehli on currrent form. and all the 400 boys not going so well either.
