IOC consider seven new sports
Eurosport.yahoo.com
Tue, 26 Oct

Seven new disciplines moved a step closer to inclusion at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, following a meeting of the IOC’s executive board in Acapulco.

The decision to finally consider women's ski-jumping, controversially omitted from the Vancouver Olympics, despite a legal challenge by leading jumpers, will dominate the headlines.

But the IOC has also agreed to look at the case for skiing halfpipe and slopestyle, snowboarding slopestyle, a mixed biathlon team relay, a figure skating team event and a luge team relay.

However, they will not make a final decision until reviewing the respective World Championship in each event next year - and it will be up to president Jacques Rogge to make the casting vote.

It was also confirmed that ski cross, which made its debut in Vancouver, will keep its place for Sochi while the seven sports programme for 2014 will maintained for the 2018 Games.

That news is a blow to the IAAF, who were making a bid to include cross-country running in eight years’ time.

The IOC has rejected previous IAAF petitions for cross country, and must consider if the event meets Olympic rules.

Rule 6.2 of the Olympic Charter states that "only those sports which are practiced on snow and ice are considered as winter sports."
