Threlfall teaches rivals a lesson in cross-country runs as Teachers' Games action heats up

JUST as he did last September, Brady Threlfall achieved the 5km and 10km double in yesterday’s Victorian Teachers’ Games cross-country action at Crusoe Park near Kangaroo Flat.

A grade 5-6 teacher at St Mary’s Primary School in Echuca, Threlfall marked another victorious return to his home town of Bendigo.

The 23-year-old kicked off his second Teachers’ Games campaign by winning the 5km challenge in 15.44 minutes.

Runner-up at the end of the two-lap dash on the bushland circuit was Matt Davy in 16.39.

A big field then lined up for the 10km challenge.

A brilliant competitor at distances ranging from 800m to 21km, Threlfall raced clear on the technical circuit to win gold in 34.58.

“It’s great to win the races, but these Games are also about having a lot of fun,” the gun athlete said of an event which has drawn thousands to Bendigo to compete in a wide variety of sports.

“This course (Crusoe Park) is really challenging.

“There’s a couple of climbs, but it’s the corners that are the biggest test.

“On a few bends you lose some rhythm and momentum.”

The athletics action folllowed a big weekend in which Threlfall was the at QEO to watch younger brother, Ryan play for Eaglehawk in the Bendigo Football League senior grand final.

Brady Threlfall will take to the basketball court today in a team which includes Stacy Fiske and Hamish Dahl who are best known for their football skills with Huntly and Coburg Tigers respectively.

The team’s pace on the court will be provided by Luke Crameri and Brady Threlfall.

After today’s play in the key and on the boards, Threlfall will then focus back on athletics.

Major events coming up for the John Burke-trained athlete include the 50th running of the Keith Huddle Eaglehawk to Bendigo on October 16.

Threlfall won the classic two years ago.

He also aims to contest the 10km in the Bendigo Bank Run For Gold on October 30 and chase victory in the 13km race in the Sweat versus Steam challenge against the paddlesteamer in Echuca on November 6.

The winner of the Ray Foley Memorial 800m at this year’s Bendigo International Madison carnival will pursue more wins on the Victorian Athletics League circuit this summer.
