BENDIGO teenager Sophie Taylor will compete against Australia's best 100-metre sprinters for a place in the Australian Olympic squad this weekend.
Taylor, 16, ran 11.87 seconds in a 100-metre race at the weekend to earn a place at the Qantas Melbourne Track Classic and Olympic Team Athletics Trials at Lakeside Stadium this weekend.
She told the Bendigo Advertiser tonight it was a dream come true.
“I had Vic juniors at the weekend and I competed in the under-20s,” she said.
“I ran 11.87 and 11.9 was the Olympics qualification time.
“We had been emailing them to find out if I could get a lane for the qualifications and we hadn’t heard anything back.
“I was at training tonight and dad came up and told me I got a lane and I just screamed.
“I was so excited.”
Taylor will run against the nation’s best on Friday night.
Her coach Terry Hicks said he was proud of Taylor, who had worked hard to earn the qualification.
He said he hoped Taylor could qualify for world junior championships this week.
