Tyson Gay: I don’t deserve to run on USA 4×100 team in Daegu

Eugene, Ore (Sporting Alert) — Tyson Gay may still get the chance to compete at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, but the sprinter isn’t looking that far.

Gay, the fastest man over the 100 metres this year, withdrew from the U.S. Championships on Friday with a hip injury – which means he’s ineligible to race in the open events.

However, the fact that he ran in the first rounds of the men’s 100m, Gay can still be picked to run on the American 4x100m relay team, if he recovers in time for the championships.

But he doesn’t think he deserves to be there because he didn’t earned that right.

“This is new to me,” Gay, whose 9.79 seconds is the fastest time this season, told reporters, “but it’s a great idea.

“But I’m not for sure (about taking that option) because I don’t really feel like I deserve it. I didn’t really earned my right.

“But at the same time it’s nice.”

Track and field fans were hoping to see the re-match between Gay and his Jamaican arch rival Usain Bolt, who set worlds in both the 100m and 200m at the last championships in Berlin, in 2009.
