Pirrenee shines in a night of highlights at Henley

If the SA Athletic League chose to show case handicap athletics it could package up the highlights from last Friday's Henley meet, add Tina Turner's Simply The Best and release the video on social media.

It was athletics at its best, full of highlights throughout the night with the stand out performance, the return to form of national 400m star Pirrenee Steinert. After 12 months struggling with form, the 2010 Commonwealth Games sprinter mowed down a good field in the Women's 120m final to win her first SAAL sash since the 2009 Women's Bay Sheffield.

Running from 2m, Steinert defeated Flinders' Amy Mittiga and Flagstaff Hill's Czenya Cavouras, both running from 9m, in the time of 14.49secs.

Steinert, who with her partner Keith Sheehy, runs the Glenelg Anytime Fitness franchise, was delighted with her form under new coach Mark Ormrod.

"I'm very happy, I wasn't sure where I was at, so this is fantastic."

"Thanks to Mark Ormrod and the guys at West Track Club, it's great to be running fast again," she said after her win.

The state's best long jumper and 4th ranked nationally, Tim McGuire showed his long winter preparation has him in great shape. In the 120m Gift McGuire (7m) had a metre to spare beating 17 year old Sebastian Baird (7.5m) and Flinders athlete Luke Houlihan (7m) in 12.67secs.

"I've been doing a lot of plyo's (plyometrics) and running 80's and 120's", McGuire said.

Former soccer player Dylan Stenson could not have been more impressive on debut when he took out the Open 400m off the back mark of 14m. Stenson 26, appeared late on the athletic scene last season recording a fast 400m time of 48.43secs ranking him 2nd in the state behind Clay Watkins. Stenson had the field covered with 80m to go, clearing out from Robert Killmier (25m) and Jake Stangewitz (23m) in 50.05secs.

In an enthralling women's 400m, the well-performed Katherine Robb was upstaged by 14 year old Natassia Messent following a stride for stride battle over the final 100m of the race. Robb (21m) rounded the field and caught her pint sized rival but just couldn't shake her off as the Camden youngster held her own to record a narrow win.

Messent will contest the All School's championships in a fortnight and looks the one to beat for the Under 16 state 400m title.

McKinnon Parade athlete Damian Robinson was delighted to win the Open 800m after suffering ill health during the winter. Robinson (76m) ran 1-54.89 to beat Tom Lancaster (70m) and Matthew Fallon (78m). Robinson wouldn't elaborate on his illness but he was happy to be back running and looks to be in for a productive season.

Sudanese sprinter Deng Bulabek made the most of his inside run when he caught the Camden duo of Grainne Henry (70m) and Kyle Roberts (20m) in the shadows of the post to win the Under 20's 400m. It was Bulabek's last start in the SAAL's junior events as he turns 20 later this month.

Camden's Kyle Roberts (6m) beat the much improved Cassidy Dorian (13m) and Oliver Callahan (4.50m) in an all male Under 17 120m final.

Reynella's Casey Buchanan was far too good in the Under 14 's 400m winning by 20m from Western District's Lauren Payne (52m) and junior state champion Hamish Petherick (scratch).

In the Over 35 events, Southern's Salvador Jurado (38m) beat fellow backmarkers Tim Callahan (46m) and Geoff Troiano (55m) in the 800m while Team Townley enjoyed a 1-2 finish in the 120m with Alex Jefferies (17.50m) beating stablemate Brett Stokes (22m), with Peter Biggs (12m) just behind in 3rd place.
