Blake blitzes season's best 9.95

JAMAICA'S up-and-coming sprinter Yohan Blake ran a season best 9.95 seconds yesterday to beat France's Christophe Lemaitre at a meeting in Montreuil, France yesterday.

Lemaitre's 9.96 seconds was his personal best and a new French National Record, beating the 9.97 seconds he ran in August last year.

Blake is the seventh Jamaican to run under 10.00 seconds so far this track and field season as the clock ticks down to what is one of the most anticipated National Trials in years.

This was Blake's second 100m race after he ran a wind-aided 9.80 seconds at the Jamaica National Jamaica International Invitational at the National Stadium in May.

Steve Mullings leads the list with 9.80 seconds done at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday while Usain Bolt who ran 9.91 seconds twice is next followed by Nesta Carter's 9.92 seconds, Asafa Powell's 9.93 seconds and Michael Frater's new personal best 9.94 seconds set last weekend.

Nickel Ashmeade is next with his personal best 9.96 seconds set at a club meet in Clermont, Florida on Saturday as well, same time done by the Frenchman yesterday.

Interestingly Lemaitre had beaten Ashmeade on the line to take the gold medal in the 200m at the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland.
