Speedy mates tracking Olympic bid

Terry Wilson | January 14th, 2012

TRAINING mates Mitchell Williams-Swain and Aaron Stubbs share a dream of representing Australia at the London Olympic Games this year.

And there is every chance they will succeed and race together in the 4x100m track relay team.

Williams-Swain and Stubbs have plenty in common, away from their shared target of the Olympics.

They are both prepared by Currumbin Vikings Surf Life Saving Club beach sprint coach Brett Robinson. And they have both won Australia's premier professional foot race, the Easter Stawell Gift in Victoria.

Stubbs won his in 2009 and Williams-Swain won the 120m scamper last year.

Stubbs, 21, and Williams-Swain, 20, are still a fair way off cracking the Australian qualifying time of 10.18sec necessary to race as individuals in London.

But spots in the 4x100m relay team are definitely attainable.

Whereas Stubbs feels 10.18sec is "a bit unrealistic" a time for him to attain in the immediate future, Williams-Swain is supremely confident he can crack that mark.

"I feel I can go under 10.20 easily," he said.Stubbs said he was targeting a time of around 10.35, "so the relay squad is a possibility if I can do all the right things".

The pair's campaign for a trip to London kicks off today when they race at the Brisbane Track Classic at the State Athletics

They will both start in the 100m sprint while Williams-Swain has been selected in the Australian relay team for the meet.
