JANA Pittman has conceded her bid to compete in the London Olympics is over.

The two-time world 400m hurdles champion has suffered a relapse of a foot injury and finds herself too far behind in preparation to qualify for London.

Pittman, 29, had indicated that she wanted to continue her career, despite having not represented Australia at a major championships since 2007.

Athletics Australia high performance manager Eric Hollingsworth confirmed yesterday the plantar fascia problem with one of her feet recently flared again.

"The young lady is hurt, her plantar fascia is no good, so she is basically not in any shape to attempt to qualify. It's as simple as that," Hollingsworth said.

"Jana may have a crack afterwards, but that is her making those choices. My focus is on the Olympic Games and she's off the radar in terms of that."

Hollingsworth was more upbeat about John Steffensen who strained his hamstring in Monday's Stawell Gift final.

Scans have revealed a minor tear, but Hollingsworth confirmed the Commonwealth Games 400m champion would be missing from the 4x400m team's qualifying attempt in the US in two weeks time.

The Australian men's team is ranked 18th in the world on times and must break inside the top 16 to be able to compete at the Olympics.

A five-man team is travelling to Philadelphia with two places to be determined after tomorrow's 400m final at the nationals in Melbourne.

Steve Solomon, Ben Offerins and Sean Wroe are locked in, but the next two places are up for grabs.

"I have spoken to John about it (the injury)," Hollingsworth said. "I am still really confident about John and I'm 100 per cent sure he will be in that relay team come August."
