Fourth fastest man fails drug test

THE sprinter ranked No. 2 among those men still in the running for the 100m title at this month's world athletics championships has failed a drug test.
US team member Michael Rodgers tested positive for a banned stimulant, his track agent Tony Campbell confirmed yesterday.
Campbell said Rodgers had told him the stimulant must have been consumed in a popular energy drink he had consumed shortly before being tested.
Rodgers is the second 100m medal favourite to have fallen foul of the drug testers in recent few days. Jamaica's anti-doping agency has now confirmed that US-based Steve Mullings tested positive for a masking agent Lasix (furosemide) at the Jamaican selection trials.
Mullings has run the world's third fastest time this year, 9.80sec, in defeating the world's fourth fastest (9.85), Rodgers at the Prefontaine Classic in Eurgene in June.
The world's fastest so far this year is Jamaica's Asafa Powell (9.79). Second quickest is America's Tyson Gay (9.80) who is out for the season after a hip injury. Gay and Mullings are training partners under coach Lance Braumann who was in jail when Gay won the sprint double at the 2007 world championships.
Tyson's absence left Mullings and Rodgers as the main threats to Powell on paper, but Jamaica's defending world champion and record holder Usain Bolt is sure to have plenty to say about that when the world titles start in Daegu, South Korea, on August 27.
As of last night Rodgers had not been told of his failed test or suspended, but he is likely to miss the world titles.
