Worst track in the league?

What was wrong with the track?

Big day for Tohl making the 120m and 300m final.

Bailey Turner with a good time for an under 14 120m when you compare that to the womens, hopefully they stick around for a while.

Interesting Grimwade wins heat in the quickest time and does not place in the semi finals. Times suggest he should have been right amongst the pace getters in the finals.

Looking forward to a recap of the day.

G'day Mex,

The track was ordinary. We had a very wet winter and no doubt the Reynella football ground would have been chopped up quite a bit. It clearly hadn't recovered from the football season with plenty of bare spots covered in sand. The outer lanes were worst affected which may have accounted for the ordinary run by Grimwade in the SF. It could have done with a mow and a roll.

Brett Richards win was a pleasant surprise as we certainly didn't anticipate it. He's been going Ok but I felt there were other runners better handicapped to win than Brett. Certainly on the basis of being soundly beaten in the semi, I thought making the dais would have been about the best he could do.

To be brutally honest and to keep it in perspective, had the race been worth 10 grand, and everyone turned up (who entered) and run fair dinkum, Brett would have struggled to make the final. (He failed to make the final at Port Adelaide in a similar field).

So whilst it's a terrific effort for a 16 year old to win a Reynella Gift off the novice, one can't get too carried away. Good for him to have an open win all the same.

Impressive effort by 17 year old Natalie Gibbs off 7.50m to win the Women's Gift. She's a training partner of Jordan Caldow so there's plenty of talent out Grange way.

Young Bailey Turner won his second consecutive U/14 race. I believe that may have been the last one he could run in before he turned 14. He's trained by his father, 1987 Bay Sheff winner John Turner. He's still very raw and has a rough style but he's very promising.

Terrific race in the 800m Open. Three backmarkers went 'toe to toe' for the last 200 and the sheer class of backmarker Rob Killmier prevailed. Ferber and Hyde pushed him all the way and won't be far away in the 800's to come.

Great to see 31 year old Andrea DiPaolo win her first race after 5 years (broken up into 3 separate stints) with the SAAL, winning the women's 300m.

I forgot to take my video camera, which I'm a little annoyed about given we had a couple of wins.

Incidentally I hope Reynella keeps going for a few more years yet. Not sure what it is about the Reynella Gift, but it's certainly been pretty productive for YGTS over the years.

I was happy with my heat run, and felt confident for the semi, but the semi I just got out slow, felt sluggish and I think I squeezed in for 4th? Working hard now on those starts ready for Mt Gambier.
