After missing out last season Curtin University have dominated the 2012 Be Active Mullewa Gift by taking out 3/4 of the major finals.
Mullewa 2012 Results
24yo Alex Glorie led the way by winning his second Mullewa Gift in 4 years. The 2009 champion came back from a form slump recently over the past two season’s showing he still has the speed to win. Allocated a handicap only 1m less than when he won in 2009, Glorie (10m) announced his return by steamrolling the field in the closing stages to snatch victory in 12.60sec from Surf Lifesaving WA’s Gemma Grigg (26.25m) 12.61sec and North Beach flyer Ben Clark (13m) clocking 12.64sec. Curtin Uni has had outstanding results in this race before, winning an amazing 8 of the past 10 finals (see table below).
In the Jim Wilson 70m sprint it was Curtin’s 19yo Bryce Teo’s turn to take victory after his usual lightning quick start. Following up on his excellent Stawell Gift form Teo (4.75m) powered home in 7.54sec ahead of runner-up Dylan Panizza (5.75m) in 7.58sec and Cole Unasa (5m) in third with 7.59sec. All three placegetters featured in the 2012 Australia Post Stawell Gift earlier this year.
The Bendigo Bank 550m was won by the third member of the winning Curtin trio, 20yo athlete Kiara Reddingius (135m) who took victory in 1.13.92sec. Second place also belonged to Curtin with Isabela Veluri (137m) running 1.14.28sec and Sophie Watts (115m) had a big day (entering all the events) finished 3rd in 1.14.80sec.
25yo Surf lifesaving speedster Gemma Grigg (27.5m) spoiled the clean sweep by Curtin Uni by absolutely dominating the 120m Novice final. She clocked one of the fastest times of the day with 12.32sec ahead of 13yo North Beach’s Abigail Dargan (29m) a distant second in 12.72sec and 48yo Masters athlete Martin Campbell (20.5m) third in 12.76sec.
