TOP ATHLETES FIGHT OUT QUEANBEYAN GIFT

Canberra Times
Monday 10th Nov 1969

Yesterday's second running of the 130yd Queanbeyan Gift professional foot race attracted a final field which included several of Australia's best athletes.

D. L. Pitman of Villawood, Sydney, off 8 1/4yds beat Gabe Very, of Plumpton, Sydney, off 6 1/4yds by eight inches, and both were credited wih the time of 12.1 secs.

One yard separated the five finalists at the finish, and Bill Howard, the dual Stawell Gift winner, received a great ovation from the crowd for his fourth placing from the scratch mark, finishing only inches from the third placegetter, W. R. Parker (7 3/4yd) of Wollongong.

Arch Brown, off 1 1/4yd, of the Parramatta Rugby League Club, finished close behind Howard.

Brown was recompensed in the NSW 220yd championship, however, when he thrashed a strong field to beat Manly's international league player, John McDonald, by 8yd, with the former rugby union international, and now league player with Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, Alan Cardy, a further 2yd away third.

Brown's time of 21.6 on a rain affected track was exceptional.

Another former rugby league international, Brian Moore, of Newtown, and his brother, Colin, made the 440yd handicap a family affair, finishing first and second respectively.

Brian King, of Victoria, finished third in this event, the time for which was 49.2secs.

Veteran Newcastle athlete C. J. Skiperdene caused an upset when he won the one-mile handicap off the front mark of 136yd. The crowd's favourite, the bald headed miler ran a well-judged race to ward off several strong challenges and beat M. J. Golder (60 yd), of Sydney, with M. G. Clancy (38yd), also of Sydney, third.

The Parramatta Rugby League Club won the footballers' relay, with Arch Brown clinching it in the final leg.

Teams from the North Sydney and Penrith league clubs, and the Legal and General Insurance company (Sydney) also took part.

The Legal and General team included Reg Austin, of Cootamundra, who beat Canberra athlete Ken English in the final of the Queanbeyan Gift last year.

Yesterday's meeting attracted 72 professional athletes competing for just over $900 in prizemoney - $300 of which was for the Gift.
