Flat chat Matt

Scott Anderson
Wangaratta Chronicle
January 27, 2014

TARNEIT’S Matt Hargreaves added his name to an illustrious list of past champions on Saturday night when he stormed to victory in the Wangaratta Gift.

Amid a strong field and in ideal conditions, Hargreaves crossed the line in 12.69 seconds for the 120m race after taking the lead midway through.

A veteran of the Wangaratta Sports Carnival, Hargreaves said there were nerves when he hit the lead, but he was able to stay focused and hold off his rivals.

“I’ve made a couple of finals at my last few meets, but haven’t had the results,” Hargreaves said.

“But I’ve been improving with every run, so I was feeling pretty good coming in.

“About 10-20m out I knew I was in front, and I just tried to relax.

“Then when I was a metre or two out I couldn’t feel anyone around me, so that was when I knew I had it.”
