At the meeting of the Victorian Athletic League on Wednesday,
one of the delegates caused a sensation when the question of
alleged malpractices by starters was being discussed. He said
that some time ago a starter at a certain country carnival had
said to him : "If you want to win, give me £3 and I will fix it for
you."
"I paid him the £3 and I won", said the delegate. It was resolved that
if certain starters are not dispensed with at future carnivals, the
League will not sanction the meetings.
£1500 CARNIVAL.
The proposal of Carnivals Ltd. to stage a £1500 athletic meeting at the
Motordrome was sanctioned, and the dates, February 9, 13, 16, and 18,
were agreed to. The principal event will be the Melbourne. Handicap of
£1000, and a contest of £250 for the world's sprint championship, over
four 'tests' of 75 yards, 100 yards, and 220 yards.
RUNNERS FINED.
Frank Schultz, of Queensland, was fined £2 for alleged bookmaking at a
country meeting. J. E. Curran, winner of the 1923 Stawell Gift, was
suspended for allegedly entering under an assumed name. J. Bretherton
was fined £2 for running at an unregistered meeting. As it happened prior
to his winning the Craigieburn Gift of £20, he forfeited first place and prize
money. J. Harris, the Collingwood footballer, was fined 10/ for a mistaken
entry form.
