Patience pays for Luke Whitney with second Richmond Gift victory

Richmond (TAS) RESULTS (& Newspaper report) - Sunday 23rd November 2014 436113-7c1de54c-72d1-11e4-9a16-65ee10dd308f

LUKE Whitney continued his love affair with the Richmond Gift with his second win in three years yesterday.

Running the 120 metre race off a seven-metre handicap, Whitney swallowed up the front-markers and held off a fast finishing Jarred Gilroy to take out the race in 12.54 seconds at the Richmond War Memorial Oval.

For his efforts, Whitney also pocketed the race’s $700 prizemoney.

His fine day didn’t end there though, as he also took out the 300 metre race off a 22-metre handicap. Whitney burst to the front with 100 metres to go and held off Mitchell Gowan in 33.44 seconds.

The 32-year-old finished second in both events last year – to youngster Russel Taib and 2013 Stawell Gift champion Andrew Robinson – and said finishing in first place was the motivating factor for him.

“When I came around the final bend in the 300 I knew Robbo would probably be the only one who could catch me but I just really wanted to go one better than last year,” Whitney said.

The women’s races also featured a dual winner, with 17-year-old Jaymie Hall taking out the female gift along with the 70m race.

She took advantage of being one of the front-markers over 120m as she burst to the front and held off Lily Castle and Laura Nicholson in 14.25 seconds.

In the 70m race, Hall came from the middle of the field to finish ahead of Lauren Gorringe and Castle in 8.56 seconds.

Hall said she couldn’t believe how well she performed on the day.

“I’m actually really surprised I won to be honest,” she said.

Other winners yesterday included Michelle Davis, who extended her record of 33 TAL wins in the 300 metres, Launceston’s Gowan in the men’s 70m, 51-year-old Darren Brown in the 1600m, and Kate Dix in the masters’ 300m.

I wonder what effort, if any, the TAL are putting in to encourage Jack Hale to run at the Christmas carnivals? The publicity Australia wide would be worth an appearance fee.
