Stevens makes it three in a row
Netley distance runner Max Stevens etched his name into the record books, at the annual Toby Shreier Pro Carnival on Sunday, becoming the first athlete to win the David Abbott Memorial 3200m - three times in succession.
It what turned out to be the easiest of his three wins in the SA Athletic League’s premier event over the metric two mile, Stevens (220m), went to the front midway through the race, extending his lead with each subsequent lap to win by 60 metres from Matthew Konetschka (265m) and Damian Robinson (260m).
Stevens 20, was delighted with his run, believing it validated his solid pre-season under coach Adam Didyk.
“I’ve had a very good winter and I’m out to see what I can do this summer”, Stevens said.
Paying tribute to Flinders coach Toby Schreier who passed away 12 months ago, Stevens said :This race means a lot because everyone knows what Toby has done for this club and the sport”.
Grange beach runner Ryan Atkins ran a superb race from the inside lane to win the Bill Ross memorial 200m. Atkins running off the back mark of 12m, relegated Jake Stangewitz (17m) to 2nd for the second consecutive year with last year’s 200m winner David Gross (14m) a metre away in 3rd place.
Coastals athlete Jess Williams (27m) upset the pre-race favourite Hayley Openshaw (19m) with strong run to the line to win the Women’s 200m. Openshaw won her heat and semi in the fastest times but tired in the final to finish 3rd behind Williams with dual Women’s Bay Sheffield winner Lynette Viney (11m) finishing 2nd.
Stawell Gift runner-up Luke Houlihan (4.75m) edged out Coastal’s Liam Wright (7.50m) to win the 70m Open by four thousandths of a second in 7.64secs. Wright’s stablemates Connor Verrall and Mitchell Tucker finished equal third.
Camden’s Kellie Symons backed up her win over 120m at Henley by taking out the Flinders Women’s 70m. Symons (8.75m) won by a metre from Lily Micklethwait (8.50m) and Katie Jury (8.50m).
In a decisive move, Tom Lancaster swept to the lead with 200m to go and held on to win the 800m Open from Robert Kane (75m) and Salvador Jurado (100m).
Chelsea Holmes (70m) won her second sash for the year, taking out the Women’s 800m. Holmes beat home the ‘Laurens’ – Hyde (44m) and McHugh (92m). Holmes won the Henley Under 17 Girl’s 120m a fortnight ago.
After finishing 2nd to Hunter Rubino over 400m at Henley, Western District’s Lachlan Burrows (90m) turned the tables when he stormed away from Rubino (100m) and Casey Buchanan (50m) in the Under 20’s 800m.
In the junior sprints, Ella Sheffield (Under 14’s 70m), Courtney Martens (Under 17 Girls’ 200m) and Jackson Daniels (Under 17 Boys’ 200m) each won their first sash with the SA Athletic League.
In the veteran’s events, Damien Nicholls got the verdict in a photo finish from Salvador Jurado to win the Over 35’s 200m while Peter Brennan easily won the Over 45’s 800m.
