Sam Osmond gives up the beer for a shot at Bay Sheffield Glory
Grange sprinter Sam Osmond became the first athlete to win two open sprints on the SA Athletic League circuit when he narrowly won the PreBay Gift at Camden on Sunday night. It follows on from his victory last month in the Port Adelaide Gift.
The traditional PreBay Gift carnival scheduled for Colley Reserve was transferred due to the extreme hot weather and the availability of lights at Camden oval.
Running off the front mark of 8.75m, Osmond was passed momentarily before fighting back on the line to beat Henley Gift winner Brett Richards (6.75m) and West Beach’s Sebastian Baird (7.5m) in 12.93secs.
Osmond believes his injury free pre-season and a stricter diet has made all the difference to his improved form.
“In the past I’ve had injuries from footy but this is the first season I’ve returned injury free.” he said.
“And I’ve looked after myself better too, keeping off the beers and eating the right food.”
Osmond will now set his set sights on the prestigious Bay Sheffield on December 28.
Coastals’ athletes won both of the 70m short sprints with Lily Micklethwait winning her first ever sash in the women’s 70m and Liam Wright winning his first sash for three years in the Open 70m.
Micklethwait (8.25m) beat pre-race favourite Amie Mittiga (5.25m) and Seaford’s Lily Drummond (9m) in 8.66secs while Wright beat the Open Gift place getters Sebastian Baird (4.75m) and Brett Richards (4.5m) in 7.86sec.
After collecting the 70m events, Coastals’ made it a treble with Cooper Williams taking out the Under 17 Boy’s 120m. Winning his first sash for two years, Williams (22m) held off Flagstaff Hills’ Xavier Poole (24m) and Western’s Lachlan Burrows (15.5m).
The Gary Thompson stable dominated the Under 17 Girl’s 120m, providing 5 of the 8 finalists including the winner Dakota Hargrave (14m) picking up her first sash and runner-up Ryelie McMullan (8.75m).
After a string of minor placings, Flinders Leigh Haussen finally took home a well-deserved sash in the 1600m Open. The five-time SANFL Grand Final field umpire led from the start and despite a gallant late charge from Damian Robinson, Haussen prevailed in 4mins 13.70secs.
In the 550m Open, Michael Nitschke was delighted to win his first sash since the 800m at the 2012 Bay Sheffield carnival. Nitschke (43m) made a decisive move with 150m to go to surge to the lead and put the race beyond his rivals to score from backmarker Dylan Stenson (5m) and Western District’s Deng Bulabek (36m).
After missing an entire season through injury, Flinders athlete Teagan Kustermann’s perseverance and courage paid off when she dashed away with the Women’s 550m. Frontmarker Debbie DeVizio held on for 2nd and her first visit to the dais since 2011 with Lauren Hyde in 3rd place.
Western’s Lachlan Burrows won a remarkable fourth sash this season storming home to win the Under 20’s 550m from Hunter Rubino and Patricia Dimitrak. It was the fifth time this summer that Burrows and Rubino have occupied the quinella in an Under 20’s race.
In other events Western’s David Miller won the Over 35’s 550m from Camden’s Amin Chehade and Flinders’ Richard McMahon while Lisa Davis’s second consecutive sash came in the Over 35’s and Women’s 1600m.
