I look forward to this race every year. Some of my fondest Pro running memories happened at Bendigo. The Bendigo Gift is one of the best to win. I can think back to some of our best Pro runners and the impact they made on the Bendigo track. You know when they get a good start when that puff of dust is visible from their start.

Anyway, cast a vote.

A lot of good runners in the mix here. On form Antonino looks good but can he cut it with the big boys when it matters? Not sure.

Adams a final certainty unless he draws sonsini again.

Punchihewa with a handy .25m lift should have him close.

Kardakovski and Paull both off big marks should go well too on a hard track.

But Ilett will win this and take the .5 to Stawell.

John Evens with a 0.75m lift from his last Vic run (Keilor), very generous. Website handicaps now have him on 7.25m.

It's not generous in terms of the fact his starting mark was probably 'unders' to begin with, relative to other athletes with a similar profile.

It's just a correction to represent the number of years he has run in the VAL without much movement until now.

From Saturday's state titles - Evans has a PB of 11.24s v Sheffield 10.88.

Sheffield (6.75) still has John covered.

yes youngy I believe this is his correct mark and places him bit closer. Quality runner never the less and still generous considering he only has 8 gift runs in Vic and some quality performances off smaller marks. Lachlan has 95% of this field covered off his 6.75, What does his 10.88 equate to for the gift.

Yep I agree - my experience with the Bendigo track, anyone around the mid to high 10.8s (FAT for 100m) should run around 12.40.

This week there are 16 South Australian athletes entered for the 70m at Bendigo.

12 of which are male and include names like Sheffield, Houlihan, Evans, Richards, Cordoma, Tucker, Baird, (who were not at Loxton).

That is more than the 8 who turned up for the Loxton 70m and, incidentally, all advanced to the final.

If at least nine actually compete, that has to be a first. More SA athletes in an interstate event than rocked up for an equivalent SA race.

Pulled out the reading glasses for this.

Sheffield
Hard to beat if the muscle man keeps his Mark after a lightening PB last weekend. Top 3 for sure.

Adams
I have been told he has been injured past couple weeks, that’s why he hasn’t been out. If runs could go well

Sonsini
Finding form and good mark, always one to watch

Punchihawa wa wa
Ready for a win after so many so close. Big danger

Vi
Have to have him. Watch

Little more looking into Sheffield his won Brighton on 6.75m so there goes a stawell lift how does he have the same mark in Vic? His ran in vic on 6.5m before how is he getting lifts

I assume his mark will be changed on the day as he must suffer a penalty for his win. As I said I believe he has 95% of this field covered off 6.75m, but theres a couple vics that would beat him off levels and he must give them a start.

Keen for the gifts and 400's this weekend but also very excited to watch the 70 and in particular Max Mason, check out this footage earlier this season at the $5000 Arthur Postle gift (over 75 yards), he ran off 2m and ran 7.18!! I believe the time was hand held but still extremely impressive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ewxc9bF2krM

Started levels with Omuvwie and beat him, and we know how good he has been this season. Gets 3m this weekend which puts him slightly behind/equal to some of the strong SA and VIC runners, if he's in any sort of decent form you'd expect him to win this, potentially in one the quickest times we've ever seen over the 70, can't wait!!

Why would his mark change? The Brighton win was back in December. He ran at Terang & Warrnambool so Lachlan may well have earned 0.25m. He's clearly demonstrated he is in the best shape of his career so if he wins off 6.75m, good on him. There's not a lot of wins coming off less than 7.0m now days.

Warnambool 6.5 Nov 30th x2 tck
Terang 6.5 Dec 1st x1 tck
gets lift 6.75
Wins Brighton 6.75m 15th Dec
does not run since.
should be pulled 0.25m minimum for winning a race.
Just because people don't win often of less then 7m doesn't give them a license to not be pulled.

Fair enough. You make a good point.
I wasn't suggesting he should get any privileges for being off less than 7.0m. It was just a general comment.

I think if Chris Vi is in the shape he was at Ballarat, he will be suited by the track, and be hard to run down.

He had 6.50m at Maribyrnong but did not run. This would assume a 0.25m lift from Warn/Terang then a 0.25m pull for Brighton win.

His 0.25m lift without running is odd and generous especially considering the weekends pb run.
However, it is within the rules for handicapper discretion as he is OGA.

Probably one the HRP need to review.

Chris Vi appeared to have suffered an injury during the 70m final at Frankston last Friday night. Did not complete the race.

This one is set to be a ripper.
I'm predicting a match race from 5 blokes off 6.75 in the final.

Final:
Adams
Greene
Ilett
Sheffield
Sonsini
Punchi

If the real muscle man is right to go I think he takes Punchi's spot.
Dunmall, Sclanders, Ant, Ireland, Brittain, Dunbar and Rosen the best of the rest.

Can the Stawell bunnies please relax! Yes Sheffield is the man to beat! Yes he will probably win and he deserves too if he brings his 10.88 form across the border and No he will not get a Stawell bonus lift for winning. Best of luck to everyone this weekend!

If a new runner rocked up with a PB of 10.88 would he get the novice mark of 6m, let alone 6.75m? I'd say he'd have no chance of getting 6m. How do you get a lift without running also? Had 6.5 at Maribyrnong and didn't run, yet gets a lift for here.
