Chris Ferreira was trained by Peter Robbie.

Braden Fraser was trained by Brian Hodgson according to the Bendigo Advertiser.

Thanks TI,

That would be right about Fraser as he was an Ivanhoe Harriers athlete from memory and Brian coached there.

Who'll be the next 1 on the list?

1995 Winner was Ben Hamilton not Brian.

Great footage. You can see by the crowds why the Bendigo Thousand is so highly regarded by the older generation.

Hello

It used to be worth more than Stawell?

Yes it was.

Late 40s and early 50s, Bendigo was worth more than the Stawell Gift. Can't say when Stawell took over as the richest.

can you title the list by the races actual name, it sounds so much better and at the moment it's titled like calling the black opal the bendigo 400m

Updated the list.

Andrew Muhlhan is the first coach to have trained two or more different Bendigo 'Thousand' winners in 20 years - since Graham Goldsworthy coached his third winner in 1993.

Youngy, Kevin Hanlon was trained by Evan Armstrong when he won the Bendigo Thousand in 1997.

Thanks BA.

Wasn't sure on that one. Thought Hanlon might have been freelance by 1997.

Evan would have a Don Cameron medal then.

[Is it possible to show the 1950 1000
for old times sake. I ran second to Sam Baldwin that year (seems like 100 years ago)

What a great list. It makes for some interesting reading and helps runners understand how historic some of these meetings are.

I would love to see a similar list compiled for all of the gifts. It's almost unheard of in this day and age for a sports organisation (The VAL) to not have an honour roll or history section on the website that celebrates it's past winners of major races.

Totally agree Johnny.

We should have similar lists for Maryborough, Keilor, Stawell, Ballarat, Rye, and Wangaratta.

Burramine would be good too. In case one day it may come back.

Leigh Phelan wins Bendigo Thousand sprint classic

By NATHAN DOLE
Bendigo Advertiser
March 8, 2015

GLENHUNTLY sprinter Leigh Phelan continued his winning streak in Sunday night's battle for the City of Greater Bendigo Thousand (120m) sprint classic at the Bendigo International Madison.

Victorious in the Geelong Gift, Phelan reigned supreme in Bendigo's great race.

The 39-year-old started off 10.75m and won in 12.39 seconds.

Runner-up was Marg Hignett (10.75m) 12.44 seconds as Edward Ware (8.25) fought on to be third in 12.47.

Phelan was amazed to have won.

"When they called my name I didn't quite believe it."

The Gift victories continue a superb run since he returned to competition.

"I gave athletics away when I was 18.

"At 34 I was overweight and thought I may as well have a go at getting fitter and racing."

Phelan said trainer Max Binnington was a huge support.

"It's Max's birthday today (Sunday), so to win for him is fantastic."

Phelan thanked long-time partner Jasmin and their children, Caiden and Tamia for their support of his athletics pursuit.

This year will be the 70th running of the Bendigo Five Thousand (Gift).

First run in 1947 (as the Bendigo Thousand) it has been an integral part of the pro-running scene and still carries a fair amount of prestige. Certainly the atmosphere & interest at Bendigo is as good as it gets in a non-Stawell carnival.

I've reverted to calling it the name it carried in the 1980's when it was worth $5,000 - the same prize money as this year. It was known then as the Bendigo Five Thousand due to the prize pool being $5,000. It became the Bendigo 10,000 for a few years when he total prize pool doubled to 10 grand.

Looking forward to adding the 70th name to the list in a month's time.

The first Bendigo Five Thousand I attended was in 1981 - won by Adrian Lingford in 11.9. Lingford had run 2nd in the Stawell Gift in 1980 to John Dinan. Up until Stawell he was coached by Butch Roberts. After Stawell he started running under Neil King and won Bendigo. Kingy and Evan Armstrong made the race their own in the mid 1980's with four wins in a row.

Evan Armstrong, Todd Ireland and Rob Lehmann are the only three coaches to have won the Bendigo Thousand as an athlete and coach.

It was the 35th running of the Bendigo Thousand carnival in 1981. 35 years on and we're now approaching the 70th running.............

Need the trainer of 2017 winner Michael Romanin? Please. Laughing

Been told it's John Nicolosi. That makes it two in a row for John.
