Lalova clocks a blistering 10.96 in Sliven

Bulgarian sprinter Ivet Lalova became the first European female sprinter to go sub-11 seconds in six-years after she won the women’s 100-metres race at the 64th Balkan Athletics Championships in Sliven, Bulgaria, on Saturday.
The former European indoor 200m champion, ran a blistering 10.96 secs (+0.8 m/s) to win her race and sound warning to her rivals ahead of the IAAF World Championships in Daegu later this summer.
Frenchwoman Christine Arron was the last European female athlete to go below 11 seconds when she clocked 10.93 in Monaco in September 2005.
With her blistering run Lalova improved her previous season best 11.08, achieved in Izmir, Turkey, in May. Her personal best stands at 10.77, which still remains the sixth fastest time ever.
The 2004 Olympic Games fourth place finisher is now the 8th female sprinter to go under the 11-seconds barrier this season.
Lalova also helped the Bulgarian team to win the 4x100m relay with a time of 44.49.
Bulgaria’s Vania Stambolova clocked a superb 54.23 to win the women’s 400m hurdles.
In men events, home star Krasimir Braykov set a personal best 46.09 to win the 400m title while Serbia’s Emir Bekric showed his form ahead of the European Athletics U23 Championships in Ostrava with a time of 50.08 to win the 400m hurdles.
