Chambers takes fifth 100m crown

Birmingham, UK – Dwain Chambers won his fifth national 100m title at the UK World Trials and Championships in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on Saturday (30) to book his place on the plane to Daegu, while Jeannette Kwakye returned from injury to dominate the women’s final, Jessica Ennis improved her shot, and Christine Ohuruogu was beaten into third in the women’s 400m.

Chambers may be 33 these days but he still has too much guile and speed for Britain’s young guns, including Harry Aikines Areetey who clinched second in a blanket finish with Marlon Devonish just five hundredths behind Chambers’ winning run of 10.09.

Aikines Areetey had clocked 10.16 in the semi-finals to be the fastest qualifier, and the former World youth and junior champion had hopes of a first national title. But after Mark Lewis Francis had been disqualified for a false start, it was Chambers who burst past the fast-starting Christian Malcolm in the final stages to take the honours in a cracking final.

Malcolm faded to fourth while Aikines Areetey dipped for silver just four thousandths ahead of Devonish.

“I tell you what, it’s not getting any easier,” said Chambers. “I relish the competition because that’s what brings out the best in all of us. It keeps me on my toes. Being among youngsters keeps you optimistic and energetic and at my age I need every ounce of energy I can get.”

As for his chances of challenging the Jamaicans and Americans in Daegu, he said: “The first aim was to qualify, which I’ve done, so now I’ve got four or five weeks left to get ready.

“The main thing is I have to keep myself healthy and that’s going to be difficult because we had a new baby girl two nights ago. My duties are going to be double, but hopefully I can repeat my sixth from two years ago.”

For Aikines Areetey, making the team was a victory in itself after he missed most of 2010 with a hamstring injury.

“Last year I didn’t know if I would be running again, but me and my coach have got me in such good shape,” he said. “I’m really confident. I really think I can do quite a lot this year.

“It’s the Olympics next year, we’ve got to step it up. We can’t let Usain Bolt and all those guys run away from us.”

Kwakye leaves injury woes behind
Jeanette Kwakye’s victory in the women's 100m was also a tale of triumph following adversity as the Beijing Olympic finallist bounced back from three years of injury woes, including two Achilles and one serious knee operation, to blow away the field in the women’s 100m final.

The former World indoor silver medallist left the opposition trailing as she blasted away from the rest to win by 0.13 in 11.23 from Anyika Onuora with Laura Turner another 0.03s behind.

“My objective now is to go Daegu, bring that time down and hopefully get back to where I was in 2008,” said Kwakye. “Things are looking good for Daegu. I’ll be on the plane for the 100m and it’s now up to me and my coach to make sure we train hard for that.”

Women's 400m
Christine Ohuruogu also sat out most of last year suffering with a torn quadriceps and has been slowly returning to form this season. She came to the championships with a season’s best of 51.49, just inside UKA’s Daegu qualifying time, but was nearly half a second slower than that here as 400m hurdler Perri Shakes Drayton took the one-lap flat title in 51.52.

Former US athlete Shana Cox was second in 51.84 while Ohuruogu left her customary late surge too late to make an impact and the Olympic champion had to settle for third in 51.91.

“It was a tough race, but I'm really happy to get through the weekend in one piece,” said Ohuruogu. “It’s in the bag. Obviously I would like to have won, but I can’t complain.”

Perri Shakes Drayton, who won European bronze over the hurdles last summer, was overjoyed to beat the specialists.

“I’m absolutely delighted to win – over the moon,” she said. “It really was a tough race and I just about managed to fight through at the end. It shows my training is getting results and that’s great.”
