McGuire sets sights on Bay Sheffield after Port Gift win
State long jump champion Tim McGuire has set his sights on the 2014 Bay Sheffield after he blitzed the field in the 120m Port Adelaide Gift on Saturday night.
In one of the largest winning Gift margins in recent years, McGuire, running from 6.50m, left the field in his wake, winning by 4 metres.
McGuire, the Western District Athletic Club's long jump and triple jump record holder, beat his fellow Westerns' athletes athletes Jordan Tronnolone (6.75m) and Connor Verrall (8m) in 12.49secs and says he will now look forward to the Bay Sheffield on December 28.
"My main aim this season is the World Championship (long jump) qualifier but until December I'm also focussing on the Bay Sheffield", he said.
McGuire recently won the Henley Gift and the ease of the Port Adelaide Gift win demonstrated his career best shape.
"This is the best I've sprinted, I think I'm in 10.7 shape (for 100m)" he said.
In contrast to the Gift result, Flagstaff Hill's Czenya Cavouras's margin over 2010 Commonwealth Games athlete Pirrenee Steinert in the Women's 120m was a mere 10 centimetres. Cavouras (9m) ran 14.32secs to Steinert's (1.5m) 14.36secs with Coastal's Lauren Buchanan (11.75) a metre away.
In a uniquely fitting tribute to the passing of Flinders master coach Toby Schreier, Robert Killmier (90m) and Jordan Harvey (140m) tied for first place in the 1600m Open. Schreier who had coached the Flinders athletic club for four decades, lost his battle with Motor Neurone Disease on Saturday morning. After the race, Killmier and Harvey who both enjoyed successful careers under Schreier, spoke of their love for the doyen of SA distance running.
"Rob and I wanted to honour Toby and he would have been absolutely stoked with this race" Harvey said.
Killmier reflected on the incredible dedication Schreier had for his athletes.
"Toby took on everyone and anyone, was out there every night, and never charged his athletes to coach them" he said.
Third place Damian Robinson (130m) who spent three years under Schreier, added "Toby was so supportive and knowledgable, he made sure he knew everything about you."
McKinnon Parade athletes dominated the 550m Open with backmarker Kostya Khudoshin (30m) beating home David Girolamo (72m) and Matt Fallon (54m) in 1min 10.50secs.
In a first for the SA Athletic League, three females finished on the podium in the 300m novice after Ali Trewartha (60m) held off Amie Mittiga (60m) and Czenya Cavouras (56m) in the fast time of 33.27secs.
Camden Classic winner Katherine Robb (50m) timed her run perfectly to win the Women's 550m from Bridgid Connolly (36m) and Yasmin Openshaw (78m).
After three years with the SAAL, Damian Nicholls (6m) finally won his first sash when he took out the Over 35's 120m beating home Peter Biggs (12m) and Michael Cassidy (11.5m) in 13.58secs.
Southern's Salvador Jurado continued his good form from Henley where he won the 800m by winning the Port Adelaide Over 35's 1600m. Jurado (135m) won by 10m from backmarker Ben Crawford (scratch mark) and Jane Mudge (230m).
Reynella's Casey Buchanan(13m) picked up his second sash this season after he won the Under 14's 120m beating Molly Farmer (14.5) and Kian Bird (7m). Last month Buchanan won the Under 14's 400m at Henley before winning the SA All Schools Under 14's 1500m title.
Joshua Biggs (60m) made it a Port Adelaide treble for coach John LeRay and enjoyed the biggest winning margin of the night when he crossed the line 40m clear of Riley Bonner (40m) and Jared McDougall (65m).
The Under 17's 300m events saw wins to Coastal's Joe Hosking (Boys) and Flagstaff Hill's Stephanie Bevan (Girls).
