Gross wins Keith Patching Sprint
St Marys' athlete David Gross warmed up for another Bay Sheffield campaign with a strong win in the Keith Patching 70m at the Brighton Gift carnival on Sunday. The Anthony Tohl trained athlete has made two Bay Sheffield finals including last year and will join his stablemate, last week's Pre-Bay Gift winner Luke Houlihan as one of the main SA chances for the state's richest footrace.
After winning his third race this season, Gross 31, said he was desperate to win the feature event at the Brighton carnival as it was named after legendary coach Keith Patching. Gross's coach Anthony Tohl was trained by Patching to win the 1981 Bay Sheffield.
"I set myself for the Patching Sprint a week ago as I know it meant a lot to Tohlly," Gross said.
Running off 6 metres Gross caught the front marker Michael Cassidy (12.25) to win by 10cm with 2013 Patching Sprint winner Tim McGuire (3.75) in 3rd place.
After a season off due to family commitments, Coastals' athlete Lauren Buchanan returned to Brighton to win the Women's 120m. Buchanan (11.75) won by 2 metres from Andrea Sparrow (7.75) and Katie Jury (12.0).
Self-trained Dylan Hicks won his second race in a fortnight taking out the 120m Brighton Gift from Coastals' Connor Verrall and dual Bay Sheffield finalist Ryan Hancock. Hicks 33, will be looking to make his first Bay Sheffield final, when he heads to Colley Reserve in a fortnight's time.
McKinnon Parade's Corey Watkins continued his domination of the middle distance events, winning his fifth race this summer with the 1000m Open. The SANFL boundary umpire finished well clear of Kostya Khudoshin and Bradley Kitto.
Event back marker Bridgid Connolly mowed down the field to win the Women's 1000m. Reynella's Jemma Nguyen led until the last few metres before Connolly edged past her on the line.
After four consecutive seconds, David Girolamo has won his last two starts, adding the Brighton 300m to his Pre-Bay 550m win the previous week.
Camden's Kellie Symons broke through for a long overdue win holding out youngsters Ellie Meich and Lucy Mayo to win the Women's 300m.
Flagstaff Hill Athletic Club won yet another veterans's double with Ben Crawford winning from scratch in the Over 35's 1000m and Peter Biggs prevailing in a blanket finish in the Over 35's 120m.
The Peter Burdett Grange beachies team picked up a treble with Kian Bird winning his first race in the Under 14's 120m, Lachlan Sheffield overcoming a stumble to win the Under 20 Boys' 70m and Tenille Channon upstaging a quality field to win the Under 20's Girls' 70m.
Luke Hildyard's Coastal squad won both the Under 17's 300m events with Ben Barratt (Boy's) winning his first sash and Georgia Corcoran (Girl's) winning her first race in three years.
