Flagstaff Hill Review

Mt Barker sprinter John Evans tightened his grip on the SA Athletic League’s Athlete of the Year award with an outstanding victory in the Flagstaff Hill Gift on Saturday. It was the Western District athlete’s sixth sash this season and third over the traditional gift distance of 120m.

Off the back mark of 6.0m, Evans over-powered Flinders’ Damian Tohl (8.25m) and Camden’s Hayden Rothe (9.00m) to score in 12.76sec.

Later in the night, running his first ever 550m race, Evans (24m) finished runner-up to Rothe (36m) after a titanic battle down the home stretch.

The 2nd place in the 550m, gave the versatile Evans the remarkable achievement of being placed in every distance from 70m to 550m in his first season of senior athletics. He has made 16 finals from his 19 starts.

“I just run the best I can every time and give it all I’ve got”, Evans said.

“The 550m was the toughest race I’ve run because it’s the longest and it’s more strategic than the others.”

Saints’ Melarn Murphy went home with two sashes from Flagstaff Hill, after triumphs in the under 18 girl’s 70m and the women’s 120m. Murphy (1m) ran 9.03sec to win the 70m from Zoe Smith and Molly Farmer (0m) then 40 minutes later from her back mark of 7m she flew past Camden athletes Kellie Symons (11m) and Niamh Henry (11m) to stop the clock at 14.36sec.

Port Adelaide’s Lyall Weir (6.75m) collected his first sash in 8 years, with a narrow victory over Flinders Tyson Hancock (10.75m) in the 70m Open.

Nikki Austin (32m) made it consecutive Flagstaff Hill 400m wins with a well-timed run hauling in Simone Rothe (70m) on the line.

In the open 1600m, after several minor placings, McKinnon Parade’s Mark Beveridge (260m) earned his first sash for four years, running away from Richard McMahon (300m) and David Girolamo (240m).
The John LeRay coached Cameron White made it a win for the locals, with the Flagstaff Hill veteran taking out the Over 45’s 400m.

Team Townley scored the trifecta in the Over 35’s 120m when Graham Henderson (29.5m) held on from Sue Turner (24m) and Lyn Peake (32m).

Hunter Window won the under 18’s 1600m while Coastals’ Charlie Hildyard (under 14’s 550m) and NBD’s Ned Merrigan (under 18 boy’s 70m) were each presented with their first sash after strong wins in their respective events.

We dodged a bullet with the weather. Great tag team Race calling/Interviews by Paul Young and Hayden Cook  - their colour and homework on Athletes was first class - well done boys!

Ali Saliu has published film of most of the Flagstaff Hill finals.

Something I forgot to mention in my review - the Gift final had the interesting aspect of the six finalists finishing in colour/handicap order - RED, WHITE, BLUE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLACK.
That doesn't happen all that often.

OK Peter,

I'll answer your post seeing he trains with me and you have cast aspersions on his character by suggesting "it was dodgy".

Overall the track and wind conditions at Flagstaff Hill were faster than at Loxton, as they have been for most of the last 16 years.

As the day progressed at Loxton the head wind became stronger, consequently no one broke 12.90sec.

There was a slight tail wind at Flagstaff Hill and the track does have a slight downhill run. The ground was in very good condition whereas there have been years when the ground has been top-dressed (eg: 2013) to prepare it for the football season.

There have been 22 Flagstaff Hill Gifts of which the average winning final time is 12.56sec.

There have been 16 Loxton Gifts with an average winning final time of 12.71sec.

There have been years when the difference between Loxton & Flagstaff Hill have been up to half a second.

In 2015, Chris Innes-Wong won both – the only athlete to have won the double in the same season. At Loxton, he ran 13.14sec off 8.00m. A fortnight later he ran 12.64sec off 6.50m. A half second faster off 1.50m less.

Based on Burdett’s very simple logic, the question should be asked why Chris IW could only run 13.14 at Loxton? Maybe he was dodgy too?

Fortunately, most of us have the capacity to analyse results beyond simply comparing one time to the next.

Only Hayden Rothe and John Evans competed in both the Loxton and Flagstaff Hill Gifts, therefore the sample size is too small to establish a real comparison between tracks this year.

Something to take note is that Lyall Weir ran 2nd in the Loxton 70m (6.75m) in 7.96sec then won the 70m at Flagstaff Hill off the same mark in 7.76sec. If one was to extrapolate that out to 120m, a 3 to 4m improvement over 120m would be reasonable.

Now other elements to consider are:

John Evans was undertaking a ‘bulkier’ training load in January/February to prepare for the 400m Camden Classic & the state 400m championship. The state champs (where John Evans ran two 400’s) were held the week before Loxton.

I know you are yet to experience coaching senior 400m athletes at a decent level, so probably wouldn't understand what effect, training for 400’s can have, but take my advice, it’s not easy juggling distances through a season and keeping an athlete up to be competitive in every distance from 70m to 550m.

There’s no question Evans was ‘flat’ at Loxton. But bear in mind, he’s a first-year athlete without the reservoir of condition seasoned 400m guys like Clay Watkins would have.

Since Loxton, the training load has gradually been scaled back to ensure he finishes the season well and injury free.

Another element is the difference in the quality of the field. At Loxton the depth was such that John under pressure from his backmark and just couldn’t relax. At Flagstaff Hill he found he was a lot more comfortable with the weaker field. Only nine athletes turned up at Flagstaff Hill, so 3 missed the final.

In summary, there a number of factors contributing to the difference in times recorded by Evans at Loxton & Flagstaff Hill. Different tracks, training loads, softer race, etc.

There was nothing "dodgy" about it.

Have a good day.

PS: I’ve sent a PM to racingmania about his post. As he wasn’t there I advised him it was inappropriate & I requested he delete it.

OK, we can move on.

Just for the record, Lyall Weir was one of the very few senior male sprinters to compete at both Loxton and Flagstaff Hill - and ran faster at Flaggies because the conditions were quicker. Because he was so consistent and ran so well at both, he was a very good example of the different conditions. Hence the mention.

I agree on rm, he crossed the line. Like a few anonymous contributors (Whispers  Razz ), racingmania can sometimes be a pain in the butt, but he contributes to the forum, albeit riding a fine line.

Youngy I take umbrance to you bringing up my name in a conversation I have not been part of.

After having the feeling of being STALKED by someone I just want to take a step backward and have a lot less input on Protrak.

Hahaha the irony of this post is very funny.  cheers  lol!

By the way your name is not "Whispers" - that's an alias you chose to hide your true identity.
