Tronnolone fires when it matters in Brighton Gift

Tea Tree Gully sprinter Jordan Tronnolone (8.00) won the first Gift of his career when he stormed off the back mark in the final to take out the Team Solutions Training Brighton Gift at Brighton Oval on Sunday. Running from 8.0m, Tronnolone picked off the runners in front of him one by one before taking the lead with 20m to go, beating the PreBay Gift winner Dylan Hicks (9.25m) in 12.55secs. Dual Bay Sheffield finalist Ryan Hancock (9.50m) and David Gross, 4th in last year’s Bay Sheffield tied for 3rd place.

Tronnolone was just beaten in his Bay Sheffield semi final last year and is determined to do better in 10 days time at the 125th Bay Sheffield. The Young Guns Track Squad athlete, in his fourth season with the SAAL, won the 70m at Devonport and the 90m in Burnie last season, however until Brighton he couldn’t quite win over the traditional Gift distance of 120m. Sunday’s win should do wonders for his confidence when he lines up at Colley Reserve next week for the state’s richest footrace.

Dual Bay Sheffield finalist and reigning Burnie Gift winner, Robbie James (3.50m) won the prestigious Keith Patching 70m sprint in a tight finish from Camden athlete Brad Schutz (9.00m) with Whyalla Gift winner Tom Sclanders (4.75m) in 3rd place. The unique feature of the race was that the four backmarkers in the final were all from the same stable – the Young Guns Track Squad. It was James’ second win this season after winning a 50m skins event at Whyalla last month.

PreBay 70m winner, Alicia Wrench-Doody (1.50m) won her second consecutive race taking out the Sportsmed Women’s 120m in a desperately close finish from Lauren Buchanan (12.50m) and Megan Letton (15.00m). The judges took some time to determine Wrench-Doody the winner, who recorded the slick time of 14.04secs. The 2008 women’s Bay Sheffield winner, Wrench-Doody has hit her best form at the right time and with Buchanan, look to be the best local hopes in the $10,000 Women’s Bay Sheffield, next week.

The McKinnon Parade club dominated the Brian Hart 1000m Open with the first five athletes past the post all McKinnon athletes, coached by Michael Buckler. Gregor Dingwall (140m) opened up a sizeable lead with 200m to go, before Mark Beveridge (90m) who was 2nd in the same race last year, overtook his stablemate in the home straight to secure a memorable win for the stable.
Following home Beveridge and Dingwall were McKinnon athletes - Matt Fallon (95m), Dillon Tee (85) and backmarker Max Stevens (60m).

17 year old Grange beachies athlete Sam Osmond continued his rapid improvement with a strong win in the Bendigo Bank 400m to secure his first open win. Osmond (26m) made his move at the turn into the straight, storming down the middle of the track to beat 2005 Camden Classic winner Matt Cousins (32m) and Southern Track’s Jake Stangewitz (27m) in 48.36secs.

Coincidentally the women’s 400m was also won by a beach sprinter, with Brighton’s Yasmin Openshaw (51m) turning on her customary power finish to win her second SAAL sash by 3 metres from backmarker Teagan Kustermann (32m) and Eleni Glouftsis (50m) in 54.10secs. Openshaw won her first race in six years of SAAL competition when she took out the Loxton 300m in February and was delighted to secure her second sash at the closest SAAL venue to her beloved Brighton surf club.

The first final of the day was won by Cheryl Zeuner (250m) who held on to win the Brighton Sports and Social Club Women’s 1000m in 2mins 46.32secs, from Lisa Roberts (160m) and Courtney Ryder (175m) in a race dominated by the frontmarkers. Zeuner fought on well to the line to win a much-deserved first sash for the season.

The two Over 35’s races over 120m and 1000m were both exciting contests where the frontmarker was able to hold on from the fast finishing backmarker. The Beach Huts Middleton Over 35’s 120m went to Team Townley’s Brett Stokes (21.0m) winning in a photo finish from his stablemate David Wilczek (8.50m) , with backmarker and event sponsor David Palmer (4.00m) only half a metre away in a time of 13.47secs. Later in the day, Andrew Wright (80m) won his first SAAL sash when he held on in the Fasta Pasta Brighton 1000m from the recent Whyalla King of the Mountain winner, Shane Thiele (10m).

Flinders athlete Tasmin McMahon (320m) won her second consecutive 1600m race, when she easily won the Mort Daly Running Foundation 1600m Novice from fellow Flinders athlete Aidan miller (140m) and Scott Hargreaves (120m) in the good time of 4mins 08.43secs.

In an exciting Under 14’s 120m final, the judges referred to the photo finish before declaring a dead heat between Georgia Corcoran (13.75m) and Emily Young (16.75m). Both girls recorded the same time of 14.24secs. Bradley Samarcq (26.0m) held on for 3rd place to enjoy his first visit to the SAAL dais.

Corey Watkins (50m) won his second Under 17’s race this season when he easily won the Les Brown 400m from Jacobi Ponbury (42m) and Riley Bonner (50m). Watkins won the Under 17’s 200m at Flinders and on Sunday, once again went to the front early in the race and was never challenged as he went to the line in 48.51secs.

In a highly competitive PolarKidsRActive Under 20’s 70m, Nichola Coomb (17.00m) desperately dipped at the line to win her first SAAL sash from beach sprinters Liam Wright (7.50m) and Tjimarri Sanderson-Milera (5.00m).

The next SAAL event is the iconic Bay Sheffield carnival on the 27th and 28th December.
