Cold, very windy & sometimes wet day in Adelaide. Poured down during a couple off the 70m heats. Big head winds all day contributed to the slow sprint times. Track wasn't too bad considering the rain over the last 24 hours. Held up well and tended to dry out quickly through the day from the wind and the sun which shone at times throughout the day.

Jordan Caldow continued to impress with a solid win off the back mark of 4.25m. Ali Saliu was hampered by an adductor strain through the rounds, but take nothing away from Caldow; it was the perfect tune up for the Bay Sheffield where he stamped himself as the leading SA contender. Saliu battled on gamely for 2nd just ahead of 70m specialist Steve Hodge who took 3rd, inches ahead of Dave Palmer. Dylan Hicks was 2nd last year (to Amin Chehade) but seems to have lost ground being well beaten into 5th place. Andrew Steele looked underdone after coming back from a calf injury and will be better in the second half of the season.
From a Bay Sheffield perspective – Caldow looked the goods; well coached & managed & has some good people around him.
The others will be battling for the 70m sash on day one.

Good convincing win by David Gross, clearing away and running out a metre ahead of Robbie James who virtually dead heated with Brad Letton but just got the nod for 2nd by the judges. Bateman ran OK but clearly isn’t anywhere near his best. Letton was solid through the three runs and would be confident of perhaps making a second Bay final.
From a Bay Sheff perspective – the 7 athletes I identified last Wednesday following the release of the marks – Caldow, Koschade, Ryan Hancock, Sims, Long-Scafidi, Thomson and Brusnahan – none of them ran in the Gift at Glenelg. So it wasn’t too much of a guide.
Robbie James does meet the others better off and probably is the one to emerge from the Glenelg Gift.
Gross will cause nuisance value in the Bay Sheff but his best bet for a Bay carnival sash is the Restricted on Day one.

Good win by Sarah Thomas who is finally finding the form that had her in the top ranked juniors in the country. From a Bay perspective, I would say it’s all over. Tamara Dartnall was 2nd yesterday off 7.50m and goes up 2m. She has the rest of the SA contingent covered by the best part of 2m. Only an interstater could challenge – similar to Zoe Kennedy last year who had a 2m plus advantage over the rest of the SA athletes but was upset in the final by NSW’s Piranee Steinert. It would be a massive upset now if Dartnall was to lose the women’s Bay Sheff. Hard to see it happening.

Ben Crawford too good and gutsed it out to the end in typical Crawford fashion to bring up his 10th win with the SAAL. While on the dais Ben stated it was John LeRay’s 150th sash as a coach, which is a great testament to John’s perseverence and commitiment to the sport. Khudoshin looked solid again. 3rd placegetter Bryce Watkins’ tactic was the reverse of Mt Gambier where he went hard from the start. This time round he let the leaders get way ahead before thundering down the outside. At one stage he was spotting Khudoshin nearly 10m after only giving him 5m at the start. If he gets it right one day he will smash a 400m somewhere.
Young runners Royans and Sinclair looked good in the heat & final and will be among the placegetters soon enough.

Debbie Roberts obliterated the race and won in a time that even Cathy Freeman would have struggled to run on that track. Clearly has gotten a lot fitter this season and won with ridiculous ease, smashing net time. Great effort by Megan Letton who probably ran a time that would have won any women’s 400m in the last decade. Letton will go on to the Camden Classic as the clear favourite. Bridgid Connolly won the women’s 1000m earlier in the day and it must have had an effect. A fresh Connolly and she may have challenged for 2nd. Sets her up nicely for Devonport. Yas Openshaw is slowly getting closer to a much deserved win, and should break through at some stage this season.
