Over35er, mate, this is a brilliant diversion from the real question - where were you?

And we have two new boys in the over35s, not just making the final in their debut over35s 200m race, but one on the podium and the other in a close 4th place.

Consistency of handicapping seems like a good goal.

What has changed since the days when the new people took two or three or four or more seasons to get competitive?

Well, the person doing the handicapping is a different person now, but the system used is still as mysterious as ever.

How are track, wind and other variables taken into account?
Do defective results records play a crucial role?
Are there discriminatory practices?
Does secret lobbying play a crucial role?

In the absence of a more transparent system with goals of consistency and fairness, such questions will continue to be asked - maybe I am the only one asking the questions out loud, but I reckon there are a lot of people interested in seeing this issue addressed, in the interests of the SAAL.

I was happy to be on the podium again at Henley after a long time feeling like I was handicapped out of the action with little hope of success against newcomers with very competitive marks.

On a positive side, an improvement that I really appreciate is the good work by the SAAL with the prompt publishing of results.

I think there is more than one person asking these questions, particularly for me is the earning a sash by doing a few years in the system, seems to have vanished. Maybe if I sit on the sidelines a few years Stokesy I could come back and have few sashes handed to me on a plate?
Which way was the 200m held? If starting from the southern end combined with the wind I'd go with it, otherwise something doesnt seem right.
And where was I, feet up watching the V8's of course.

There has never been a set of rules in our sport to say a runner MUST compete for 3 years before they can start making finals or win a sash.

Generally it has always been that that it is all relative to the ability of the athlete. The slower the athlete the longer it takes to attain a competitive mark.

The better the athlete the sooner they are in the mix.

It appears to me the novice or starting mark for an Over 35 year old making his debut in a 200m was 11m. Gina Ceracitano was entitled to his starting mark & due to his above average ability was instantly competitive.

It is no different to the starting mark for Dylan Stenson who has already won the Henley 400m and Flinders 800m. He wins from the marks allocated that were in fact lower than the nominal starting mark for an open athlete. Because of his above average talent he was immediately competitive. I don't think anyone seriously begrudges him winning at his first two meets. If anything there is a little envy....who wouldn't want to be able to jump into the sport on debut and win in the red off the back mark.

If you lack the natural talent to be competitive from the general starting marks, then of course it will take time before you work out to the mark you ultimately need to be competitive.

This sport is about 160 years old and from day one there's always been athletes winning on debut or within one or two starts.

In respect to the athlete on the podium - perhaps it was 'overs' but again, there's no rule to say an athlete must start off an uncompetitive mark. Handicapping is a tough job and not an exact science, there is a lot of subjective analysis required.

Over time everyone gets a chance to shine at some stage....some quicker than others.

Well said, Youngy, makes perfect sense. Guys as much as I like you and all of the Over 35's athletes:
1. I don't believe for a second we all don't try hard week in and week out
2. Train hard and set your own goals.
3. This is a public forum and should not be used for handicap discussions, it damages our sport. If you have an issue, seek an explanation politely through your coach.

I have an issue, several issues actually, and my coach is not interested in seeking explanations from SAAL or anyone.

So I have in the past used this public forum to discuss issues.

I have received a range of responses.

Clearly you consider that "it damages our sport" to discuss issues in public.

I disagree, I believe that is harmful for us to not discuss these issues.

Earlier in this thread I remarked on the issue of "first time marks" in the over35 sprints, that there seemed to be a new policy of giving generous marks resulting in first race final appearances and podiums.

Today at Port Adelaide, the issue got more serious for me, with a first racer getting an easy sash and a big dollar reward.
