Yep, no doubt any decent miler could probably feature each weekend. The numbers in SAAL distance events is poor. No one is going to argue with you there

If it was about prizemoney why do people regularly pay up to $20 to $50 to do a fun run -where there is no prizemoney? And there's distance runners who run around weekly for nothing at ASA.

Distance runners definitely don't do the sport for prize money, except a few will enter the select mile at Bay time as there is not many other races going on that time of year. Also with the 60m limit (about 4% handicap max) it makes more amateur runners want to race with the handicap probably not having as much influence on the race (compared to other races).... however, even the select mile prize money is less than the 550m I can see this year (looks like I picked the wrong year).

Some of our best milers are out running ParkRun more often the pro running, simply chasing a training run or a PB.

Run around weekly at ASA for nothing is VERY subjective? A few are simply using those weekends as training runs, but you could argue that these runners are chasing PB's and is more important to them than $120 + sash. Guys like Jacob and Max paying their way to Vic state 5000m titles and coming home with new PB's is why these guys train 15-20 hours week.... it's not $.

Yep I agree. However SA distance running is going ok (ParkRun and ASA numbers seem to be higher than normal)... it's just the current culture of distance running in SA. You only need to go out to Adelaide Harriers on a tue/thur night to see the runners out there, or even a sunday long run. Why they aren't running SAAL.... maybe a simple monkey survey to current and previous members would be useful?

I think perhaps lack of coaches training their athletes for a pro running calendar in this state may have a bit to do with it also. No doubt, Micky Buckler is one of the few who has a large focus on following the pro circuit with his athletes.... and he gets rewarded every week!

As for the Messenger Press - there's been 5 review articles, the lead story has been about:

Henley - Oliver Callahan, an 18yo who broke and still won the Gift.
Flinders - Max Stevens winning the 3200m for the fourth time.
Port Adelaide - John Evans, a 19yo rookie winning his 3rd race - the Port Gift in his debut season.
Tea Tree Gully - 17yo Kyle Roberts winning his first open sash in the 200m. (Ties in with the teenage winners of open sprints)
Sacred Heart - Kate Monks - winning her fourth sash including the three Women's 120m.

I always try to lead with something that has a touch of WOW factor.

If you think I'm going to lead with the winner of a race that had 3 starters you have rocks in your head. It's not Corey Watkins fault, but it's hard to get excited about a race that was so predictable and soft.

I dont blame you here either.
