It was tough seeing so many scratchings in the mile, but credit to those who ran and especially Jords and Corey who had a good last lap battle. Maybe a few less scratching would have occurred if they ran the 800 at the start of the program? Also a few distance runners ran the 550 novice also?
Regardless, SA distance running on the SAAL circuit has regressed and it probably needs to be addressed. However for those still interested in SA distance running... on Wednesday night we should see one of the better 5k state titles we have seen for a while with Riley, Jacob, Stevens, potter all in good form. The girls running will be Trengove, Wood and Noonan who are all going well! If we're lucky we may even get to see Lopez run also..... fingers crossed. All is not lost in SA distance running..... but today at sacred heart, the mile scratchings were certainly concerning!

SA Distance Running is far from a crisis! Sure, 3 runners is not a great sign, but as Nittaz mentioned, there is already a 550m and 800m on this program. Numbers for distance races at Athletics SA events are the best they have been in years! The problem is not with the runners - it is with the SAAL.

If you go to a SAAL meet, you have heat after heat, of 70m, 120m, Open, Women, U18, O35... then semis... then finals... then there is a random distance race worth nothing shoved in the middle to fill time. Hardly appealing to go out and run a race no one cares about? Most of the Messenger articles are all about the sprints. Commentary during the meet is all centred around the sprints. The SAAL Facebook page also passes up on many of the distance races.

A very large majority of the prize money is allocated to the sprints. During the week it was announced that both Camden Classic races will be for $4000. Bay Sheffield also the same money for both 'Open' and Women. There is nothing stopping Women entering either the 'Open' Bay Sheffield or 'Open' Camden Classic. Sure they are going to have to run off the limit and you would only have the best of the best women making the races, but a golden opportunity to increase the strength of distance running has been missed.

That money could have been put into the 'Open' 800m or Select 1600m at Bay Sheffield. There is also a fairly solid 1600m at Camden that could have benefited from some extra prize money.

In no way am I saying that the Womens races do not deserve extra prize money - but the SAAL have missed a huge opportunity to fund some distance races, and bring what is currently a very talented bunch of SA distance athletes out to pro running!

Also, credit where credit is due. Well done to Corey Watkins on the double, regardless of numbers. The McKinnon Parade stable are keeping these distance races alive for the time being.

Alright. I'll narrow it down for you - SAAL distance running is in crisis. Anyone who thinks it's not is living in denial. 3 runners is an open mile event is appallingly low. It has little to do with prizemoney. Corey Watkins would earn more money in a season than 90% of sprinters. Why? Because he fronts up every week and has a genuine crack. Any reasonably miler could turn up at any SAAL meet and walk away with prizemoney every week.

If it was about prizemoney why do people regularly pay up to $20 to $50 to do a fun run -where there is no prizemoney? And there's distance runners who run around weekly for nothing at ASA.

No, the issue is far more complex than just prizemoney.

As for the Messenger Press - there's been 5 review articles, the lead story has been about:

Henley - Oliver Callahan, an 18yo who broke and still won the Gift.
Flinders - Max Stevens winning the 3200m for the fourth time.
Port Adelaide - John Evans, a 19yo rookie winning his 3rd race - the Port Gift in his debut season.
Tea Tree Gully - 17yo Kyle Roberts winning his first open sash in the 200m. (Ties in with the teenage winners of open sprints)
Sacred Heart - Kate Monks - winning her fourth sash including the three Women's 120m.

I always try to lead with something that has a touch of WOW factor.

If you think I'm going to lead with the winner of a race that had 3 starters you have rocks in your head. It's not Corey Watkins fault, but it's hard to get excited about a race that was so predictable and soft.

Great to see the 400m fields hold up with limited scratchings.
Very interesting to look at the results , runners from the first heat all ran faster times in the final or very close to it.Runners in the second heat all ran slower times in the final than their heat. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
Camden here we come.

Left before the 400 final, convinced I saw the winner in heat 2.
He was in heat 2 but not the one who cruised to win the heat.

Yep, no doubt any decent miler could probably feature each weekend. The numbers in SAAL distance events is poor. No one is going to argue with you there

If it was about prizemoney why do people regularly pay up to $20 to $50 to do a fun run -where there is no prizemoney? And there's distance runners who run around weekly for nothing at ASA.

Distance runners definitely don't do the sport for prize money, except a few will enter the select mile at Bay time as there is not many other races going on that time of year. Also with the 60m limit (about 4% handicap max) it makes more amateur runners want to race with the handicap probably not having as much influence on the race (compared to other races).... however, even the select mile prize money is less than the 550m I can see this year (looks like I picked the wrong year).

Some of our best milers are out running ParkRun more often the pro running, simply chasing a training run or a PB.

Run around weekly at ASA for nothing is VERY subjective? A few are simply using those weekends as training runs, but you could argue that these runners are chasing PB's and is more important to them than $120 + sash. Guys like Jacob and Max paying their way to Vic state 5000m titles and coming home with new PB's is why these guys train 15-20 hours week.... it's not $.

No, the issue is far more complex than just prize money.

Yep I agree. However SA distance running is going ok (ParkRun and ASA numbers seem to be higher than normal)... it's just the current culture of distance running in SA. You only need to go out to Adelaide Harriers on a tue/thur night to see the runners out there, or even a sunday long run. Why they aren't running SAAL.... maybe a simple monkey survey to current and previous members would be useful?

I think perhaps lack of coaches training their athletes for a pro running calendar in this state may have a bit to do with it also. No doubt, Micky Buckler is one of the few who has a large focus on following the pro circuit with his athletes.... and he gets rewarded every week!

Agree with you Nitta and you are lot closer to the middle distance running scene than I am. I only see it from the SAAL's perspective.

It's just sad to get to an SAAL meeting based in Adelaide and see only 3 athletes going around in an open mile.

On Saturday we had three athletes on the dais in the 120m Gift (running for the same prizemoney as the 1600m) who are on or near the novice mark and aged 19, 20, 21.

It would be fantastic to see three or more new athletes around 19/20/21 (and another dozen or so making up the field) going head to head off marks around 100m in a 1600m event.

Even one - say a "John Evans" type who fronts up to his first season with very limited athletic experience and goes bang - capable of winning off the novice mark first up at say an 800m and 1600m. Just adds something of an X factor to the sport.

I'm sure they're out there, somehow we need to find them.

We are crying out for another strong distance running stable - similar to say what Mark Hipworth has in Victoria, to compliment Michael Buckler's squad.
