Keilor Gift: Favourite upstaged by Tassie speedster

BY LANCE JENKINSON

THE spoils of this year's Keilor Gift are heading to the Apple Isle.

Tenacious Tasmanian Andrew Robinson produced a major boilover to cross the finish line first ahead of raging favourite Khan Marr.

Robinson, starting 3.25 metres in front of second placegetter Marr on a 6.75 handicap, used every bit of his advantage to win the 120-metre race in a time of 12.588 seconds, a mere 10th of a second faster.

"It was definitely an upset," Victorian Athletic League starter Matthew Webster said.

"It was a bit of a surprise."

Marr was the talking point both in the lead-up to the meeting and throughout the day at the Keilor Recreation Reserve.

His story was undoubtedly the most interesting of all comers, as he had been part of the Jamaican bobsleigh team before settling into life in Williamstown.

Marr also had form on the board with his running as he blitzed the heats and went into the final with form to suggest he could keep the title local.

This night, however, did not end the way it started.

"He was a red hot favourite after his heats," Webster said. "He couldn't reproduce it in the final."

It was Robinson, a little-known teenager from Launceston coached by Ray Quarrel, who upstaged the local contingent to become the first interstater to win the Keilor Gift since 2008.

The ever-popular Billie Jo Peterson Memorial 120-metre women's race was taken out by Albury-Wodonga's Bridget Oakley in the time of 14.437 seconds.

Running off a handicap of 6.00, Oakley won from Katie Moore and Patricia Fox.
